It's nice and I like when it's lit up, but the building is too stubby. The Frost building is thick too, but taller and it's crown is on a completely different level.

Funny. I literally just walked out of City Hall. I was thinking the same thing....if only it were 100' taller, it would be decent looking tower.

I have been living at 44 for years, our apartment looked right at the Hyatt.

Right when I move they finally paint the damn thing...

To the best of my knowledge, this restaurant was the last Asian-oriented business at the Chinese Cultural Center. Its closure seems another nail in the coffin for that development:

"Szechwan Palace has closed following a years-long legal dispute with the majority owners of the Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix."

Desoto is going to be a bar. A big bar. Chuckie Duff is behind it, he bought the building last month. The bar will be called Life. For those unfamiliar he developed Cobra Arcade Bar, Ladera, Gracie's, Palabra, Sutra, Rebel Lounge and many more. Opening mid January or maybe February early.

I don't know anything about the concept or who will be operating it but Chuckie has done some nice things around downtown.

Too bad they couldn't have kept the name DeSoto. But sounds like it will be a much better, more useful concept. Glad to see it isn't going to stay closed long

We are sitting here in the office trying to decide what they are going to do with a space that large. I don't really know Chuckie (friend of friend of friend) so I'm not comfortable reaching out to ask him. We feel like it almost has to be a music venue.

Well there goes my bet that it was going to end up a Trader Joe's.
I agree it's a very large space for a bar, live music seems on point.

That would be my best guess as well. The influx that The Stewart is about to bring will be huge for anything that opens in that space.

I had a feeling that the Renaissance might inspire the Hyatt to get a paint job. Don't know if I'm right, don't care - see ya later brown!

Curious if Sheraton's upcoming renovations will include the exterior. Not sure if those beige tiles can be painted or would need to be replaced with a cladding etc.

The DeSoto building didn't come with any parking. Kind of killed many of the more creative options for the space

De Soto has about 20 parking spaces and the church across the alley allowed parking for De Soto.

Where did you get this "no parking" issue? ive never heard that?

Having parking will not be a big issue at this point with the Stewart coming online in a couple of months across the street and Circa on Central and Portrait all within a 5 minute walk.

I was just about the ask about the develope going up across the street from there? Are those apartments or a hotel. I've went the the other smaller spot a few times, really good lunch specials. Yeah, the closure of theRanch Market there had to be devistating. With the apartments or whatever going up, I was wondering if they were gonna have retail, it seems like a great opportunity to make it a real China Town but I guess that seems bleak. It's sad with the growing Asian population in our sprawling city, the population is just so spread throughout the town.

I had no idea the ranch market closed.

That place got me through a lot of impoverished home cooking. Sad.

Also, the whole corner of Dobson and Warner and Chandler may as will be Chinatown. Struggled for years to fill in, now it has majority Asian businesses on every corner i think. The Dobson corridor has long been home to Asian businesses all the way to the light rail.

The Chinese Cultural Center should probably be demolished. Its inward design doesn’t contribute at all to its sustainability, let alone its now-disappeared ethnic orientation.

I don't think it was a Ranch Market. It was a Chinese grocery store, and it was so ethnically awesome. Having worked in China, it was really cool to visit.
