‘Vital Link’ Broken By Halt Of Direct Flights Between St. John’s, Dublin: WCTU

The Waterford Council of Trade Unions is chiming in on the debate on WestJet’s decision to pull its direct flights between St. John’s and Dublin.

Secretary Tom Creedon says the loss of the direct flight will break a “vital link” which they say is integral to the tourism industry in the South East of Ireland.

The Council issued a news release indicating that Newfoundland is the only place outside Ireland that has an indigenous Irish language name—Talamh and Eisc.

Some 3,000 men left Waterford for Newfoundland each spring to work in the fishery, returning each fall.

By 1820 an estimated 33,000 Irish from the Waterford region had settled in Newfoundland permanently.

The Council is asking for the help of the Canadian and Irish Ambassadors to maintain the historic link between the two islands. They urge everyone in the South East of Ireland to lend their support to the effort to have the service restored.

So where are Aer Lingus, Air Norwegian or even Ryanair? If the route is important and I assume profitable, why is there no mention of the Irish airlines?

Few pictures of the new Maple Leaf Lounge at St. John's International. There was a MLL previously at the airport, but it was pretty small and unremarkable. This however is pretty 🞵🞵🞵🞵. Too bad I'm a peasant and will never see the inside of it.

Looks really nice. A few of the smaller airports I frequent have just recently updated or added a MLL. Saskatoon's looks very similar in size and "shwankyness".

The powers that be really need to try to court some other airlines to fill this gap.

Removal Of Direct Dublin Flights A Blow To Region, Says Holyrood CAO

Holyrood is booming, thanks to the resourcefulness of its people and the Oceans Holyrood Initiative.

But they’ve just been dealt a serious blow in the form of WestJet’s cancellation of the direct Dublin flight.

Today phase three of the OHI project began, with federal and provincial funding helping to market the town’s growing ocean tech bona fides to the global market.

But Gary Corbett, Holyrood Chief Administrative Officer, says the town’s momentum has been dealt a blow from WestJet’s cancellation of the Ireland flight.

He says it has seriously complicated things.

The town was looking at hosting an international innovation weekend in fall 2019, with a number of groups working with Ireland.

Corbett says every time an obstacle is set in place that drives up the cost of transportation, it impedes what the town is trying to do.

He hopes that the ‘powers that be’ will rethink the decision.

Had to go to BMW this evening after work to pick up my car. I saw this beauty parked by the YQM terminal as I exited Highway 15.

Kalitta Air flight 958 is now on route to Anchorage Alaska (according to Flight Aware), presumably on to China afterwards, likely with a belly full of lobster.

You would be right. There was an article (likely a couple pages back in this thread) discussing how Halifax became too busy and Moncton are getting the overflow of lobster deliveries to China.

2018 passenger numbers were released for YSJ today.

Taking a moment to send out a great big THANK YOU to all our passengers—you've helped us set a new All-Time Passenger Record in 2018! ❤️

We had 282,217 passengers fly via YSJ in 2018 which is a 7% increase over 2017 and marks the airport's second consecutive record-breaking year in passenger traffic results. 🎆

We thank you for your continued support and are excited to see this momentum continue in 2019!

Nice numbers. If they keep that growth rate up, they should hit 500,000 passengers a year in 10 years or so. If SJ actually grows, that PAX growth rate might even be sustainable too.

I've never been to YSJ, how is it for space? Can it handle those PAX numbers or will it be needing an expansion soon?

500K? I think that's jumping the 🞵🞵🞵 a bit. Let's aim for 300K before we start thinking about doubling overall passenger totals in a decade.

It's average for space. The departures area could be enlarged (if there's more than one flight departing within a half hour it gets pretty crowded). Otherwise it's probably suitably sized. It would need a number of new flights and increased PAX in order to warrant an expansion.

Speaking of new flights. I thought that there was supposed to be an announcement that involved a Boston Terrier and a donut 6 months ago. Any news or rumours on this one anyone? People I think were lead to believe that there was link to Boston in the works.

At 7% growth rate, 300k should be hit this year for 2019. (At 5% it would be reached in 2020 instead, and be just short at 296k in 2019).

So a steady 7% growth rate (probably not sustainable) they would reach 500k in 10 years.

At 5% growth rate, they would reach 500k in 2030, so 12 years or so.

It's not really that unattainable, but they will probably have to work for it, and they'll likely need to start planning some upgrades for 2025 (which means they should be announced soon).

The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) hosted 424,324 passengers in 2018, an almost 7 per cent increase over the previous year. This is the first time in the airport’s history it has reached the 400,000 passenger milestone. It also marks the 9th consecutive year of record-breaking traffic growth at YFC.

Still waiting on final traffic numbers for 2018 for CYQM (Moncton), but traffic was up 3% for the January-November period, and using this, based on the previous years numbers, passenger volume for 2018 should be in the range of 686,000.

Freddy is starting to nip at our heels!!!

Here's a link to the CYQM newsletter for Winter 2018 (released in December).
