It's not too far a stretch.

Six foot ceilings are the new eight.

A few updates from Davie Street (my photos, today).

===

Davie gets the first of two new cranes at this location (Mirabel at Davie/Broughton). Background building is The Jervis, which was recently completed. New residents are moving in now, just in time to watch their views disappear in real time.

The former/soon-to-be Safeway with two rental towers, at Davie/Cardero. Slightly taller tower on the left with orange tarps is the new rental at Davie/Bidwell.

A view from the other end of the block, with the Davie/Bidwell rental tower in the foreground.

Same block, other new rental tower across the street (next to London Drugs). Getting close to completion - exterior construction elevator came down recently.

In the distance is the new rental at Pendrell/Denman. Cladding is underway - jury is still out on the white.

One more update from the West End today. This is the corner of Robson and Nicola. Looks like the rental (?) tower there is about to get underway (my picture, today).

False Creek Flats Innovation Hub

Quote:
We've meant to share this for a while now. Darren spotted this model of what looks like a massing concept for the False Creek Flats Innovation Hub back in September at Vancouver City Hall. Unfortunately, we're not sure what review it was there for

Perhaps the False Creek Flats model are in conjunction with the proposals that should have been submitted for three of those buildings - pretty much in the centre of the site.

Developers were supposedly responding in June to a request for ideas to develop about 300,000 sq. ft. on a 99 year lease. It would have around 76,000 sq. ft. of market and non-market housing and 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial space for light industrial start-ups and accelerators, affordable industrial space for social enterprises and other uses, and market rate spaces for laboratory, digital, and other office uses.

Additionally, 50,000 sq. ft. of space of non-market industrial arts production was required, with double-height spaces for the movement of large works and stage sets in and out to support the theatre productions in downtown Vancouver.

Is that even a thing? What's next?

Non-market injection site?
Non-market private equestrian club?
Non-market exotic car owners club?
Non-market quilting bee club?

Where should the City replace the existing facility for assembling stage sets for City-owned production spaces? It would seem that an existing industrial area already owned by the City is a good place, and method of ensuring the needed support facility.

We've already got a couple of those

Sure - sounds like a good idea for Dunbar-Southlands. There's a great one in London.

Sounds like Kerrisdale? Modelled on San Dieguito, no doubt

That's probably West Point Grey. There are quite a few in Washington State.

Not really the city owns all the lots where those buildings are placed.

Stemcell is on the bottom right.

There's a second phase of the Angiotech (now Stemcell) building that was approved several years ago, so the context there could be different too. Obviously there will also be development on the parking lot to the south of VanCity, (also City owned) and possibly McDonalds, one day. There's also an approved office building by the station, to the north of SkyTrain,

Technically this isn't part of Downtown.

Wow, I'm shocked. Apart from the urban garden of course, and the modular homes. That's like 4-5 different businesses, unless I'm picturing the wrong area.

The City are landlords to the Alfa Romeo dealership, the used RV dealer, the workshops to the east (where they have the back of house civic theatre workshop, and a few years back rebuilt concrete truck barrels). They're also landlord to Fontile and the other businesses in the 1920s buildings along Terminal Avenue. If this model is an any way accurate, they may not incorporate them into the development, unless they're part of the dark grey podium - presumably more industrial or retail uses.

Which thread does False Creek Flats go into?

Anyways, it seems like there are active plans to turn the old second phase of the old Angiotech plans into a three-storey data centre.

Isn't there a push by Heritage Vancouver groups to save these buildings?

The same group silent on VSB teardowns

They are. They've already started moving to a Production Way campus in Burnaby where they plan to consolidate their operations. Not that it impacts the shown concept; Stemcell's soon-to-be former building is across Station St from the proposal.

I expect their move will take a couple of years to work through, but it'll be interesting to see who's interested in their old locations once they're available.

Thaks for the info.

With the height of the black Onyx building (next to Pacific Cnetral Station) being taller than these,
I wonder if these will end up being htaller than shown
(i.e. not quite so tabletop).
