Contract to Clear the Way for Team Gushue Highway Extension

The Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador today announced that a contract valued at　$276,000 has been awarded to C.W. Parsons Limited to clear the highway corridor for the Team Gushue Highway Extension. This marks the first step toward the construction of this important piece of regional highway infrastructure.

"Minister Crocker and Minister O’Regan will also provide an update on the extension of the highway from Topsail Road to Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive."

Was such an update provided? I haven't seen anything in local media.

TGH opening delayed due to weather !

I passed by Sobey's Square this morning and there 7 men painting a turn sign on the pavement and what a smell in the whole area. Looks like they were trying to dry the pavement with a propane torch.
Don't know how much luck they had.

There's still yellow lines missing at Blackmarsh and also the Old Pennywell / Brier Ave area.

The City has closed Old Pennywell Rd / Brier Ave area today from 9 - 4 for line painting. It's very cold today, not sure what the progress will be.

So, earliest Thursday ? Stormy Friday, so maybe Saturday ??

What else is on the " must-do" list?

The Blackmarsh Rd work is supposed to finish up by Dec 7th but this doesn't seem to be a requirement for TGH opening. The Capt Whelan / Blackmarsh redirect work is still in progress. They've paved the new wide bicycle path at the top of Capt Whelan ( now Blackmarsh ) but there's still a lot of work on-going there.

NL is passing a law to require drivers to give a cyclist or pedestrian a minimum of 1-1.5 m buffer space when passing, depending on the speed limit.

Also covered in this bill is zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol for taxi drivers.

This has passed the second reading so is now at committee for final amendments and calcification. It will then require a third reading before royal ascent. Thankfully it had all support from all parties.

So it looks like it will open on Friday.

I noticed the lights were on last night.

Old Pennywell / Brier has been painted. They've added an arrow to the east-bound lane on Old Pennywell Rd, so now there's two turning lanes onto North-bound Columbus Dr.

That reminds me... a couple of years ago a different paint was used on the arrows of the Kenmount-Karwood roundabout. Well, actually it looked like stickers to me instead of paint. Anyway, it took all of one snow fall and one cut through with a plow to completely annihilate the arrows. I like to think a lesson was learned that day.
