Where are they going to move the event area currently in NE False Creek?

Hastings Park could probably densify its parking lots into a parkade in order to allow for the conversion of the parking lots into events space. The Parking lot near Bridgeway looks like a decent place for expansion...

I don't think that area will be developed in our lifetime

Whose lifetime are we talking about here? Remember, it's been less than ten years since Olympic Village was started, and just over thirty since Yaletown.

There are a million places that could go. It can be somewhere new every time, preferably near transit of course.

Is Vancouver's False Creek home to the world’s largest pop-up park?

Developer’s 3.5-acre ‘community park’ includes ball hockey court, ping pong tables, beach volleyball, amphitheatre

But at the rate things progress in this town, McMillan thinks the waterfront pop up park could be there anywhere from three years to 15 years. No one can say for sure.

Did they just imply that things move slowly in Vancouver? Lol, they have clearly never been to other North American Cities. There are not many places where mega-projects like OV and Concord Pacific Place pop up overnight.

I think McMillan's been spoiled by a trip to Asia. Developers need to remember that lack of planning, hyperabusing eminent domain and $400/month minimum wages are not normal on this side of the pond.

They're likely going to come down, it's just quiet right now. A lot of contracts have already been signed and it would be difficult to reverse things at this point.

I should be more specific. The Concord Pacific lands are currently unique in Vancouver for their ability to host large 'pop up' events, like Cirque du Soleil, and the Aurora Winter Festival.

There is no real, large (non park) asphalt or gravel lot designed for these massive event complexes.

The planners were supposed to be taking the loss of the event space into account- and Hastings Park is one of the few areas in Vancouver suitable for a large event podium. It fits, too, since Hastings Park is an 'entertainment district', and close enough to HWY 1 that buses are viable for fast transit.

The previous City government allowed higher density for the developers so that they could help pay off the demolition costs. However, it is also possible that the newly-elected councilors may vote against newer building penetrating through the viewcones.

Read this:

https://pricetags.ca/2018/10/17/survey-results-vancouver-council-candidates-on-public-city-views/

We shall see, but I always feel we have lots of red tape going on here to get anything done.

That's not a problem specific to NEFC or even Vancouver. Cities are getting more crowded and more expensive, and so big, empty lots are now seen as mostly useless.

Likewise, the outdoor fair at Lansdowne will have nowhere to go once the mall gets redeveloped as condos; Cirque's "new home" beside the south end of Cambie Bridge will eventually go as well, once OV Phase 2 kicks in.

Exactly, no one will ever develop condos in the middle of a park... and there's already sports/temp stadium facilities in Hastings Park (Empire Field). That's why it's the perfect place to put it.

Either that, or on Sea Island, where development is likewise limited due to the nearby airport- and there is transit access.

Not necessarily.

Hastings Park, the home of the PNE, lost much of its flexible event-hosting capabilities in the late 1990s when most of the fair buildings and open hard surfaces were replaced with landscaped green spaces and a lake. And more landscaping is planned in the years to come as part of another wave of park greening...

... As for the performance of a grassy area for a prolonged special event, it is far from superior to say the least.

Several years ago, Bard on the Beach sought to reduce its annual six-figure site maintenance and conversion costs of using Vanier Park’s grassy area by proposing to lay down permanent gravel or even paving. The site turns into a mud pit after each production season, and the re-seeding during the non-growing fall season has proven to be ineffective.
Sea Island, maybe, but only if YVR's willing to sacrifice a parking lot.

What about the space that Bard on the Beach occupies every summer? That's certainly the same scale as Cirque.

I don't know about Aurora, it looks a bit bigger. I will report back after I go.

Apparently, it's best to skip Aurora.

Ya I've seen some early reviews. Vancouver loves to — on events that come up while also complaining about "no fun city". r/Vancouver especially.

I probably wouldn't have gone but my wife wanted to, and we have a young child. I'm sure it will be fun.

In the haters' defence, most of our main attractions - even the newest ones - would be D-listers in other big cities. We're getting closer, but we're not there just yet.

That article inspired me to post about this.

Time to clear up come confusion....
Brown is my proposed Parkade location (from experience, people mostly park on the front, rather than the back lots anyways)

Blue is my proposed new event area (it is more narrow than the Concord Lot, which might be a problem...)

The current event lands @ Concord Pacific.

YVR has been pretty willing to sacrifice parking space for its own expansions... And the space next to the BCIT Aerospace Campus is pretty empty. Though, I do agree that a lot next to Templeton Station is most likely best.

Didn’t stop reversing Surrey LRT or the GMB...
