[Moncton] Downtown Developments

The Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation announced their "Extraordinary Care Campaign" today, with Robert Irving as the chair. They intend to raise $8M which, will be combined with a provincial government contribution of $35M to build two new additions to the Moncton Hospital.

1) - a new Maternal and Newborn Care Unit will be built on the physicians parking lot between the Professional Arts Centre and the main part of the hospital. This building will contain a new labour & delivery unit, a new neonatal intensive care unit and a new maternal fetal medicine clinic. A dedicated OB/GYN OR facility will also be located here for urgent care of obstetrical emergencies. Finally, there will be a hostel for patients families.



This is a render of this new building.You can see that it is connected to the main part of the hospital by an elevated pedway. I don't know if the colour of the new unit is accurate or not. I find the green off-putting.

Construction of this new unit is to commence next summer.

2) - a new Cardiac Care Centre is also to be built, although the timing of this second project is a little less certain. It will be located on the other physicians parking lot in behind the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic. The Cardiac Care Centre will include a new CCU, a cardiac step down unit, and a special procedures room for such things as cardiac pacemaker insertions (removing this procedure from the main hospital OR).

So, between public financing and fundraising, this project will cost in total nearly $45M. Of the fundraising goal of $8M, apparently $5.6M has already been committed by donors.

This is all fantastic news, but I have no idea where the doctors are supposed to park since both our lots are being sacrificed. Somehow I can't imagine physicians making their way to the hospital on the city busses, especially at odd hours to attend emergencies.......

Yup this is great news! TY for posting I forgot to post it, last month. It's on Youtube from the Dieppe City council meeting from October. I wonder if they will ever build a 3rd hospital if these too get big enough? Probably not, but I would like to have your opinion.

A two storey addition seems like a waste of valuable land. It's unfortunate that both these expansion projects couldn't be combined into a single new wing on one of those lots. How large in the Cardiac Care Centre supposed to be?

I would think it would be smaller that the new Maternal/Newborn Wing, and likely won't occupy the entire second parking lot, but they will still have to close down the whole lot during the construction phase (just like they did for the Sheldon Rubin Oncology Clinic).

I've heard they may put the new Cardiac Care Centre on stilts to allow for parking underneath (to recreate the original footprint of the lot), but that still means that there will be a lot of disruption in the meantime.

Are you sure?

The enclosed parking will all be on the ground floor, in behind the retail units facing St. George St. I don't think the place will have a basement, only footings.

If the equipment was only levelling the land, this may be in prep for the building, not a parking lot........

Maybe they've become aware construction wouldn't start for the next couple of years, so they figured they might as well use the space as a paid parking lot, being a couple blocks away from the Avenir Centre.

Pizza Girls/Katch Seafood is apparently open now on Main Street.

Hopefully they have enough operating capital to keep them going for the next six months (until pedestrian traffic on Main Street builds up again).

Walking in downtown Seen the Tank in front of the New Food Bank was gone. Then seen in the T&T it was moved to Sussex.


Also the Historic home of Mary Grannan has suffered enough damage that one of the options on the table is to Demolish it. Thanks Squatters.

Two low story buildings...why are things so afraid to go "up" in this city.

As far as the parking...the whole parking lot at the hospital should be a about a 4 story parking lot by now...perhaps that's in the near future.

I heard from a couple of sources close to the Ice Cream shop that they are looking to expand. Currently they are looking at main st and the north end. Hard to believe that they would do both at the same time but I guess we will know before summer begins.

I've been there more than a few times and I would love to see them open up closer to me.

Cool, that sounds great! They do have great Ice Cream! I wonder if they'll ever put a kiosk in the Avenir Center like Joji's because I'm sure the city would love to support another local business. I'm sure there's room for both.

If I were with the City of Moncton, I would consider long and hard before acquiescing to this request.

According to the CBC article, the Harper Street property falls outside the geographic boundaries of the downtown core where tax incentives would apply. This already disqualifies him (unless he is able to convince council otherwise).

We don't want a surplus of hotels in the city. If we are to build hotels, I think they should be strategically located. To that end, it would make more sense to subsidize projects in the core and downtown west end areas within easy walking distance of the Avenir Centre. This would make logical sense, and would help encourage the growth of an "entertainment district" downtown. There already are other potential hotel projects in the Avenir Centre neighbourhood in various stages of conception, which may or may not be built. We don't want to jeopardize those potential projects.

That's where I would put my money if I were the city..........

I read the article earlier. My thought is why didn't this man do his due diligence /research? If I wanted this tax credit I would ensure my proposal was on a property to which I could receive the credit. The article bothered me as to me, anyway, the article was suggesting the city was at fault. The developer should have known this credit was inaccessible to him.

Me thinks there is a whole lot more to this story!!
