Gotta get Xcel to sell that land- not something they are generally keen on doing unless they are absolutely sure they no longer need the asset.

Quite the interesting read.

Let me digress to generalize about our Hispanic friends. Hispanics love kids, they love having children and often lots of them. Because they often work in the service industry they likely don't make much money; consequently they have to live in 'less desirable' neighborhoods that are more affordable. Wait... less desirable? You must be kidding; they live among relatives and friends who also have children and they love their neighborhoods; it's their home. One could validly argue that they live 'richer' lives than many since they're enriched by their children (and friends) who they cherish.

Much is the same for H1B visa holders from India except that they more typically work in the tech industry or maybe a company like American Express that does business all over the world. Young couples who are new arrivals waste no time in starting a family. Traditional household where mom cares for the children and dad makes money. Their one weakness is they love buying a new car. They will also carpool which helps the newer arrivals save up to buy their own car. Otherwise they live a simple life and 'religiously' send money to their family back home where a little money goes a lot further in helping out.

Point being that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is also true that "gentrification" displaces people lower on the food chain. It forces them to find one of those 'less desirable' neighborhoods where they can liver happily ever after.

Context is Everything
My wife and I don't have kids because global overpopulation is the main contributor to climate change, which is going to destroy human civilian unless extreme changes are made within the next 5 years. This includes a global ban on fossil fuels and a transition to a hydrogen based economy. At this point, it is completely reckless, careless and negligent to reproduce. Those who do reproduce should be fined heafty tax fines. Those who have no children should be made tax exempt and receive a full tax withholding refund.

What an extreme viewpoint... and I was just reading an article talking about how Colorado could be in trouble since the birth rate is dropping below the rate to just sustain our current population. Should make you happy I guess

The only reason anybody cares about climate change in the first place is because of its negative effects on humans. And the only reason to do anything to solve it is to reduce the strain on humans. Telling humans they can't reproduce is deeply counterproductive to the goal of reducing human suffering. And stigmatizing those who do is how genocides begin.

So no thanks.

Adopting aggressive carbon budgeting and taxation is easier and more effective, and doesn't come with the cost of throwing humanity under the bus.

Children should be taxed based on height, at a $1000 per foot. Also, light beers should be banned.

That is a very human centric viewpoint. Human activities threaten all life on Earth, not just human life and comfort. I do not support violence or murder of any kind. To link my comments to genoicide is offensive; as I am a pacifist. I also was not telling anyone they cannot reproduce. I was simply saying we should tax them for reproducing, so that society could have revenue to develop renewable energy sources and develop technologies to control the climate so that we can terraform earth as we see fit. Religious doctranation is truely what stands in our way for maintaining a stable global population and addressing climate change. Education and re-establishing separation of church from state is the key to ending this social compulsion to reproduce beyond replacement level and be delusioned that climate change isn't real because God is is control and that humans are superior to other life forms. There is no need to kill people. We need to educate people and make sure schools only teach truth, not delusion.

Once we establish ourselves as a multiplanetary species, then everyone can begin reproducing uncontrollably again.

Certainly in this day and age one should be free to choose not to have children for whatever reasons without guilt. But I wouldn't think it wise to blame children for any sins of their forebears.

Interestingly, The Colorado Independent reached out to University of Colorado Boulder professor Paul Chinowsky, whose research focuses on costs, adaptations and infrastructure impacts related to climate change and who co-authored the report’s chapter on transportation. All due respect but the Professor might not be aware that heat - in the desert for example - is not the serious problem he suggests. In fact roads 'weather' much better.

On a lighter, musical note:

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
Wake up everybody no more sleepin' in bed
No more backward thinkin' time for thinkin' ahead
The world has changed so very much
From what it used to be
There is so much hatred war an' poverty
Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way
Maybe then they'll listen to whatcha have to say
'Cause they're the ones who's coming up and the world is in their hands
When you teach the children teach em the very best you can

Climate change seems like a classic example of the tragedy of the commons - the only way to have a real impact on the "shared" climate, is through collective action. But as long as there is no will for collective action, nothing meaningful can happen. Tragedy ensues.

I'm a little nihilistic when it comes to this issue. I believe in climate change, I think its a catastrophic threat to the planet, and that extreme action should be taken now to limit the damage and I support that. But my view isn't widely shared, or not widely enough. So I accept that what scientists say could happen, will happen. Because we have no capacity to act to avoid it. So let's party like it's 1999.

Interesting to think what the country and world will look like in 50 years and to consider what people growing up then will think of us. A friend was telling me recently about some dystopian novel he was reading where their were trials and executions of the senior citizens, for their crimes against humanity in destroying the planet. Lol.

Yep without positive in-migration and/or immigration this will affect the state’s economy. Meanwhile Utah leads the nation in birth rate, I can only wonder why...

The DP article mentions climate change as a reason

I agree. But I am not worried about trials and executions of the old folks. Keanu Reeves is going to come down soon, on behalf of the rest of the galaxy, and take the planet away from us. We can’t be trusted as custodians of such a rare treasure.

Feel-good story for the Holidays?

Maybe not so much:

45,000 evictions a year sounds like a lot to me.

There but for the grace...

It’s great that 2200 Larimer Street and the adjacent parking lots were purchased for redevelopment. I hope that 2200 Larimer can be renovated. It is a 100 year brick building that has plenty of potential. It has been quite an eyesore for as long as I can remember. The Rocky Mountain Public Media building design isn’t anything special, but a PBS station studio is a great addition to Arapahoe Square.

The design is fine. The humor around it arose from the the grandiose original designs which steadily degraded to this. LoL.

Ah yes -- this is the building that was going to anchor all the new development in Arapahoe Square.

Unfortunately those Alexan barges on Welton seem to be the ones that dropped their anchor on Arapahoe Square......

All the philanthropic money is being diverted to the Denver Zoo to bring back the polar bears.
