Disregard that figure - momentarily forgot that the $8B projection was debt interest.

What are you talking about?

The proposed cost was 3.5 billion and it is the worst kept secret that the front running bidder was going to be significantly lower than that, as in under 3 billion.

Ah okay, I see it now.

Seriously though this “twinning the tunnel” option has to die.

It is the equivalent to: ”Retainig the old Pattullo Bridge” and “Surface LRT along Fraser Highway”

Considering Malcom's rant at the last Mayor's Council he would go absolutley bezerk if he found out the government was going to extend the Canada Line. We are going to have to wait another 4 years for even talks about that. What I would like to see however, is the bridge built with the capability and grades to accommodate a future CL extension.

I think we'll be waiting a lot longer than 4 years for talks of a Canada Line extension. There are enough other higher priority projects that don't have funding yet = there's plenty of time to let Nimby action cool down in Richmond.

It will be a very long time before there is even a chance of a canada line extension to Ladner. In fact we all will have passed away before that will happen.

Not to mention given the corridor (large river crossing, vast expanses of ALR, surge passenger flow from the ferries, and the sheer distance of more than 30km to the eventual terminus, White Rock) is far more suitable for rapid bus / commuter rail systems.

Almost exactly what this project entailed with the direct bus system to Bridgeport Station... hmmm.

*IF* the Canada Line is ever extended, it will be to Steveston and that is it.

Wish this silly conversation that pops up about extending the Canada Line south of Richmond would stop. It is a dead end idea that will never happen and the logistics are competely illlgical.

If I recall correctly the rumours said it was closer to $2B.

Given the cost and scope of the upgrades, that's impossible.

Are they? We have a Ferry Terminal and now a giant mall out there, with tons of development on the drawing board. It wouldn't be the worst idea we've seen. It makes more sense than Skytrain continuing east beyond Langley.

How do you plan on crossing the fraser river?
DO you have O&D stats to confirm your pipe dream that such a market exists?

It's not going to happen as long as there are other places to spend our limited funds where we can achieve a greater benefit. And there are a LOT of such projects around. Just because we CAN do something doesn't mean it's the RIGHT thing to do.

It does make sense to have rapid transit to the ferry terminal and there are many huge developments out in south east richmond such as the movie theater and condos/mall at no5 and steveston.

However I’ve heard that the land from Richmond to delta is not suitable for building similar to how it’s difficult to build a bridge to Vancouver island. Given that much of it can be built at grade I assume there will also be significant cost savings however it’s still a very long stretch to build.

PS: I think a lot of the Steveston village residents wouldn’t want a skytrain over there as it disturbs the whole quiet retirement area vibe.

I'm not advocating this extension any time soon, but it is pretty funny how many people insist on a 10 lane bridge, minimum, yet also insist there isn't enough demand for rail transit.

Well, I'm guessing cross-border/ferry traffic and truckers won't be switching to rail anytime soon.

I believe the figures here are the full cost estimate including project management by the Province. The ~$2B figure i was referring to was the construction contract only - as I said all rumours at the time was it was ~$2.1B.

Amount of savings vs. expectations per that article are on the order of what I said.

can you guys take the extending Canada Line extension to the fantasy/insanity thread?

It was NEVER designed to be extended and it will NEVER be extended. Ladner and Tsswwassen has a population of 21112 and 20933 respectively. If you seriously think it's worth building over stretches of ALR to serve not even 50k population, you need a huge reality check.

THANK YOU.

Any politician bringing that topic up is so full of hot air that I'm surprised they don't float away. That, and they're trying to come up with nonsense arguments to support the NDPs plan to shelve the bridge. Follow the political affiliations of the politicians making the most noise against the bridge and surprise surprise...
