Oh yeah baby, that's what I like.

I thought there were supposed to be some forming system in place for the shafts. Are they not in yet?

So six elevators? Lol they did it good and proper

When are we going to get something 200m+? Don’t stop thinking and dreaming cuz we never know

There’s a thread called “Canada 10 Tallest U/C”, hmm I wonder when Winnipeg will be on the list...

It will be, once it's fully erected.

Okay, I'm done!

On a bit more serious note, I guess they're almost ready to put up girders. Anyone know the timeline of that happening? Are we talking about months? Weeks? Maybe days?

I still can't visualize what the building's actual footprint will be...

^I think the tower goes out 2 rows of columns each way from the elevator core. On the west side, it would go out to where the tower crane steel is installed. I think. Of course the tower isn't square, so there will be jogs and such.

The podium with the restaurant and other stuff is odd shaped.

Yes, and stairwells.

Well, unforunately I don't think Winnipeg is ever gonna get near that thread haha

There are tons of tall boys U/C across the country and far more proposed, so in a couple years we're gonna probably see an explosion of 50+ story stuff in greater Toronto and Vancouver areas.

Still, it isn't truly relative to me... 42 stories is a huge structure and Winnipeg is appropriately psyched!

^ Winnipeg could get on the top 10 list if there is another nationwide crash in construction as there was in the early and mid 90s and something gets built here during that time. 300 Main probably would have been near or at the top of the 1998 version of the list, TNS probably would have been on there too.

EDIT: I just checked the diagrams, and from 1993-1999 there was only one building in all of Canada that went up during that time that was taller than 300 Main will be... just Simcoe Place in downtown Toronto which was 8m taller.

Toronto is exploding right now and doesn't seem like it will end anytime soon. I don't see Winnipeg ever cracking the top 10 list. Cracking the 200m mark though is doable. Just need someone with money who wants to build something tall haha

These prolonged streaks always seem like they're never going to end, but they always do. (80s construction boom, 90s construction crash, mid 00s to now construction boom)

I wonder what Winnipeg's next tallest building will be?

Office seems unlikely, I could see a new office building or two getting built to meet the demand for prestigious modern-specced buildings much like TNS, but nothing enormous that would be over 25 storeys.

Condo seems unlikely too, even if we get a couple new downtown towers, I don't think we're likely to see another SkyCity monster proposal.

Hotel seems like a bit of a dark horse, Winnipeg has a lot of older hotels with fairly dated facilities and I could see a big new tower going up to take a lot of the business currently going to the Fairmont, Delta, etc. Although thinking it over, getting close to 500 ft seems like a long shot.

Apartment seems like the likeliest bet based on overall market conditions.

Institutional is another possibility I suppose, maybe some kind of governmental, health care, university, courts or other such proposal could just come out of nowhere and shock us all!

My bet would be residential of some sort, after the current projects get finished. It would take some will, but you never know.

I'm not sure what type of institution in Winnipeg could build a large tower. Hydro is one of the largest employers and they made it to 25 storeys (could've been taller yes).

Hydro's floor plate is also gigantic. I'm sure that if they had been restricted to a smaller lot we could easily have seen 40 to 50 floors.

Office demands can change - for example we never know if IG or GWL suddenly want a new tower or to consolidate their spaces, or if Richardson’s need more demand suddenly for whatever reason. I don’t disagree that it’s unlikely but there’s always that unknown especially in an isolated market like winnipeg

I wonder if sky city had a different group behind it, would it have gone through. 50% presold should have been enough to get that project started I would have thought.

I could also see taller buildings being more feasible if more empty lots get filled as demand for height would increase as well. Winnipeg isn’t Vancouver but filling those empty lots is nothing but a net positive on height aspirations

I don’t see downtown residential tower demand slowing such that it would suddenly stop. We may not have 300 main calibre towers every year but small ones I would expect to continue, with the positive momentum and focus on downtown living, and notably Winnipeg is growing at a steady and predictable clip now. The CMA is already well over 800k

tall buildings aside for a quick second, once/if the bay building gets redeveloped, Winnipeg should be commended across north America for its rehab/re-use of its heritage buildings. looking back 20 years at how many were empty to where we are now with almost all of them occupied and thriving (still somewhat debatable of course), is quite a feat! ok, back to tall, shiny erections....

According to https://winnipeg.ca/cao/pdfs/population.pdf, population of the city is forecast in 2018 at 765,800, CMA is forecast at 842,900! (stats from Conference Board of Canada) I think both are healthy numbers, and obviously the CMA is one that the city may prefer to use to encourage economic investment in the city. It's a bit worrisome to me, though that the geographic area used to calculate the CMA is pretty large. Are they just padding the stats or is this typical for this type of calculation?

I suspect that we won't see a new tallest for quite some time which is frankly very okay with me. However, when we do I suspect that it will be a hotel with residences. Similar to what Sutton is building but all consolidated into one tower.

Had we gotten two towers instead of 4 for TNS we would have a 42 floor building and a 35 floor building. So we would have definitely come close to the new tallest with at least one of those.
