1450 West Georgia - Pre-App Open House

Some extra photos and City Duo's experiences at the event

New West End Tower Rooted in Community Character, Branches Out to the Future

By the time we arrived at the Westin Bayshore, we already felt like it had been a very long day. Perhaps it seemed that way as the days are so short at this time of year, or maybe it was because Darren and I had just spent an hour at the new St Paul’s Hospital open house event in the Olympic Village.

Unfortunately for us, the only food, a tray of cookies, was long gone, along with most of the 67 people who came to this event. That said, some of those individuals arrived after us, and there were a few stragglers from the dinner rush left over too.

Most seemed simply curious about what new piece of architecture was joining this vibrant gateway into Downtown Vancouver. I do not think anyone left disappointed. as this fir tree inspired vision balances the more elaborate designs in the area with one that is more traditional, but still refined and unique in its identity.

The angled cutouts make it look top heavy.

That's what first struck me, too. I hope they might rethink, redo that. Is the design finalized and passed? If not, perhaps the UDP could address that...(and redeem their image a little)

Are they retaining the exterior? Seems a waste to demolish such an ancient and historic building entirely.

I'm glad something is finally being done with that boarded-up building.

From a heritage retention POV, or simply any retention, there is nothing to retain. Definitely something worth to recycle, maybe, but nothing to save as a building form.

Surprised none of the attendees of the open house mentioned this but I saw this juicy little detail on the info boards:

Looks like the White Spot location is being designed by Ceasar Pelli's firm Pelli Clark Pelli. Yet another starchitect to add to the Alberni row.

Interesting in regards to César Pelli, hope this project will be appreciated more than his Eaton's building a few blocks away.

Admittedly I overlooked that, as I didn't realize that a new design was being proposed for that site, even though Daily Hive suggested it almost a year ago.

I doubt the renders floated a year or so ago were ever the design, just a massing to support the planning principles.

That said I think a sharp more simple well executed design would work well here in contrast to some of the more attention seeking designs.

Those were just placeholders prior to the Toigo family selling. No disrespect to IBI, but you pretty much need a starchitect added to a downtown project these days if you want to hit the top-end condo values.

That White Spot is essentially the last establishment in downtown Vancouver familiar to my Papa (he is 87 years old). Born and raised in Vancouver, he has lived on the North Shore for decades now. That was his dinning spot whenever he visited friends south of Burrard Inlet.

Even myself gone for 5 years have lost a large portion of my old haunts. Gyoza King on Robson being the most regrettable.

Interesting: twin towers. Coincidentally, Cesar Pelli also designed the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

I wonder if we'll get some updates on the Bayshore redevelopment soon.

60-storey 'pixelated' tower proposal for Vancouver's West End to be revived
Kenneth ChanNov 30, 2018 1:48 pm

A previous proposal to replace a pair of three-storey rental housing buildings in downtown Vancouver’s West End is set to be revived, Daily Hive has learned.

Property owner Henson Developments is restarting the redevelopment application process that had been initiated previously for the sites at 1059 and 1075 Nelson Street

The restarted proposal retains the 60-storey tower concept, with 25% of the units proposed to be social housing, five-storeys of market rental housing, and the remaining units as market condominiums.

Well that just made my Friday.

Hopefully the design is similar to the fantastic renders we saw a few years ago.
