@Torontonians

Is everyone pretty pleased with how the West Don Lands are taking shape? Haven't been yet. Looks good on paper.

Calgary's The Dominion, designed by Urban-Agency of Copenhagen. The design has been revised, and the project being built by local developer Bucci is starting construction fairly soon as rental residential.

Really like that Calgary proposal.

Not really a skyscraper guy (ironic), but I wonder if it wouldn't look a little better if it had another 5 stories tacked on top...

Over the last few weeks, I've seen ads popping up for this huge project, called Line 5 condos. It's a 33 and 36 floor tower replacing walk up apartments along Broadway Ave, in the Yonge and Eglinton area.

Modest infill apartment building on Gottingen Street (68 units + retail). The grey/white section in the background is already built and occupied, and the block was mostly vacant land for as long as I can remember. Midrises like this with retail and/or townhouses at ground level doesn't get as much attention as tower developments (partly because it's less controversial) but is the bread and butter of inner-city development in HRM right now, especially in the North End.

I mean I personally think it would look great with 70 storeys tacked on top. But I also very much like the urban village scale of this

For a newly-built, still-in-progress neighbourhood, it's turning out as one of the better ones - certainly far better than something like Cityplace. The architectural quality & streetscaping are pretty good, but like most modern developments of this type it suffers from large scale, block sized buildings that are a little antiseptic at street level and don't provide for much in the way of pedestrian scale or interest. There's also not much to draw a non-resident down there yet. Still has a ways to go though.

Proposal for three residential towers, 26, 25 and 9 floors, on Queen Street in Downtown Ottawa. Total of 566 units, mix of rental and condos, with possibility of using some of the space for a hotel instead.

One entrance to Lyon Station is currently located on the site, but direct access between the complex and station will not be provided due to "security" reasons.

The complex will replace a surface parking lot and former Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Claridge Homes proposes to build three towers around the Lyon LRT station with a mix of rental units, condos and retail space. Some of the development, which is being designed by NEUF Architects, could be used as a hotel. The L-shaped property is sandwiched between Queen and Albert streets. Source: Development application.

I havent been but the brick pavers look pretty good and architecture is overall decent. It should look pretty nice when the trees start to mature in 10-20 years. My gripe is the utilitarian retail spaces(big sheet of glass and double height exposed utility ceilings) and the cobrahead light standards. Wish they had opted for the classic acorn lighting for continuity and aesthetic sake.

exciting to see more downtown development for Ottawa. More residential downtown is always valuable.

Chinatown - Calgary - 28 storeys x 28 storeys x 12 storeys - Residential, Hotel

The buildings in question are the twin residential buildings and the green-roofed hotel in the centre of the top image.

^ Nice to see a Chinatown development in western Canada going for a contemporary Chinese aesthetic instead of the ye olde Cathay look which has been so common up to now.

Nice brick detailing, and I like the scale of the pedestrian alleys - even in the likely event that the Blade Runner-esque signage doesn't make it to the final product.

Do other prairie cities really have historic Chinatowns? I know that Regina and Saskatoon do not. Edmonton's is just sad. I can't picture Winnipeg's.

Perfect scale , really. And great details. It proves that retail spaces dont need double height ceilings , the builders just need to pay attention to fine grained detail.
