WSJ: Amazon HQ2 Announcement ‘Imminent’

New York City and Northern Virginia will be the homes for Amazon.com Inc.’s second and third headquarters, according to people familiar with the matter, ending a more than yearlong public contest that started with 238 candidates and ended with a surprise split of its so-called HQ2.

Okay, now can I air my biggest gripe about the whole thing? The name HQ2. A headquarters is by definition a single location. Call these what they really are, regional offices (albeit very large ones). Or maybe one of these will be the new HQ and Seattle becomes a regional office.

Correct: Amazon's game is free advertising, incentive welfare, and demographic / city planning information so I'm sure HQ11 will find its way to Atlanta so long as GA taxpayers bend over for Bezos and Amazon like VA and NYC did.

I think its just 1 / 2 = .5 HQ in HQ2.

So H divided by 2 gives you half a headquarters.

Whereas if it was just HQ it would be 1 so HQ=1.

The Q really stood for quotient.

HQ1.33 because you can believe Amazon won't create 50,000 new Amazon jobs in NVA and NYC combined. Think more like 33,000 together.

They've continued to break ground on buildings in Seattle as recently as two weeks ago. Collectively that would bring them to around 14,000,000 sf locally. Even if they drop some leased space at some point, it seems farfetched that any other location would ever be more than a large fraction of Seattle's office.

Politicians will rush to throw taxpayer's money at Amazon, and foolish taxpayers will thank them by re-electing these same fools. Scott Walker's disastrous Foxconn deal was not enough to deter other idiotic politicians.

Its going to be interesting to find out which building or building(s) they will occupy. Also, in a tight market, where the employees will live.

One Court Square could be it, but yet again... it remains a question mark until we find out.

Hopefully it jump starts the sunnyside yards project. I just hope that when Sunny side starts, they go big on it (once they place a deck over the yards). Not many sites of that magnitude in the city, and they need to go big. The airport might be the limiting factor in all of this, but with the right designs, millions of sq-ft could be added.

I could see temporarily leasing space, until something like Sunnyside is built. Although it would be great if they jump started 2 WTC, but that's just fantasy. Just outright buy the damn tower and get it rising.

It's pretty common to put the CEO and "C" suite in one location and most of the worker bees in another. Downtown SF is becoming full of these arrangements because the execs still want to live there and can afford it but they realize middle management on down really can't and that makes recruiting hard.

So Amazon's real HQ will be wherever Bezos and his top lieutenants land. They can call the rest whatever they want.

But since Amazon is really several companies--Amazon Web Services, the retail operation and so on--it's possible they could run the major parts from different "headquarters" and eventually those major parts could become fully independent companies, one headquartered in each "headquarters".

In this sense, I translate "major sites" as distribution warehouses or something. Lots of employees but not necessarily high salaries.

Both Atlanta and Dallas are doing fine without Amazon. Atlanta continues to score multiple IT companies that are creating innovation hubs that are still bringing high paying tech jobs. Just within the past two weeks Salesforce and Blackrock announced they are adding 1600 IT jobs. Atlanta also scored Norfolk Southern corporation headquarters relocation.

Thanks, Amazon, for getting Atlanta and Dallas more recognition as a ranked and worthy city, and the attention of so many other IT companies. We good!

So, basically they're taking floors 3-11, with commercial/amenities over floors 1, 2 and 12. Pretty interesting. Directly across from a Crystal City metro, which is one station away from Washington National.

The obsession over Dallas and Atlanta not getting Amazon HQ2 is weird as well as said.
