Aren't the Mooseheads literally named after a beer company?

Yes, but the brewery has not paid anything for sponsorship to the team for many years. I guess the name has stuck only due to recognition and the owners are reluctant to change it.

"Organigram Field"?
In fact team sponsorships and naming rights for sports facilities are specifically prohibited by section 22 of the Cannabis Act.

Schooners, Admirals, Storm: Suggestions roll in for Halifax CFL team
Francis Campbell Chronicle Herald November 8 2018

LeBlanc said he will have a more concrete financial proposal to bring to city staff in the next three or four weeks. He said a stadium will take about 18 to 22 months to build, generating an estimated $137-million contribution to the municipality’s gross domestic product during construction, including $103 million in labour income.

LeBlanc said it is imperative that the stadium be used 12 months of the year and suggested two ideas to make that happen — a full-time ice rink in the centre of the field from Dec. 1 on that could be used for public skating and hockey programs or a dome that could accommodate other indoor sports.

I was wondering if there might be a provision like that

Just a thought

I was kicking around a concept when discussing the land claims made by the Membertou and how they wanted to build a entertainment complex on the site. What if the traditionally named Turtle Cove got a turtle shaped stadium with hotel and entertainment complex built by the band?

Like a scaled up version of this?

http://stadiumdb.com/news/2016/04/new_design_the_turtle_stadium_of_tiberias

Or a scaled down version of this

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/tokyo-olympic-stadium-looks-like-turtle

In a time of truth and reconciliation it would fill a lot of boxes on a checklist and could lend to something iconic and provide a design with a roof.

Welcome to input, wishing Fenwick was around, he'd have a few renderings done up by now with all the recent excitement.

That means built with federal money.

Still, it is probably the most efficient way to get the feds to pay for something like this here.

I think that would be a great idea. Let the band build it and manage it.

That way we would be guaranteed a well-run, first-class facility, that has other options for entertainment and thus becomes a year-round draw for the public, and this would benefit the band as well. A win-win for everybody IMHO.

Motivation for the feds to throw cash into it would definitely be a bonus as well.

There is a federal election in less than 12 months.
Announcing funding for a stadium is hardly a vote getter.
Announcing funding for pre school programmes is a vote getter, and has a much greater return to society.
Not hard to figure out which proposition would be well received.

But the federal Liberals are known to throw around our money with impunity as long as they think something might let them cling to power. I'm sure their thinking would be they could do both.

Indeed! A casino, a conference center, a hotel/restaurant, plus tax-free tobacco, gasoline and soon, weed. Sheer nirvana.

Maybe they could erect a 100 ft statue of Glooscap peering over the end of the stadium.

Truly not meaning to pee on your positive parade, but have you seen the condition of many reserves, how could that be guaranteed?

I was thinking of the many successful aboriginal-run casinos across the country.

The reserves are a whole other topic that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss here.

And FWIW, it's not a 'positive parade', just an observation.

I don't know about the local bands, but I can say that there are a lot of business savvy individuals in the aboriginal community in general.

I don't understand the negativity towards the first nations people here.

In other news

I like the idea Glooscap out over the water.

Another major issue is the power infrastructure coming from Tufts Cove, can it be put under ground?

Always love getting federal investment here. Due to the non-creative nature of our wish lists, we don't maximize the programs out there. Small minded thinking will sink the city but that's just my two cents.

An overall sense that the Canadian taxpayers are funding most everything they do. Exacerbated recently by our current PM and his agenda.

You mean Reconcilliation? Um... very complex situation with a very nasty history... don't think it's a discussion that we want to have here. I certainly don't... and won't.

So let's leave it at that.

Article from Vancouver paper :

"There are other factors to consider. The Ottawa Redblacks, for example, paid a franchise fee of a reported $7 million when they came into the league for the 2014 season. The number for the proposed team in the Maritimes hasn’t been made public but it’s thought to be in that range. .................

Earlier in the article is this re possible sale of BC Lions :
But first there has to be an agreement over the value of the franchise.

Woodall and Keith made Braley a formal offer last year in the $14-million range that was rejected. That offer is now off the table, largely because the two businessmen believe the Lions are a diminishing asset. Average attendance was actually up marginally this year over last from 19,858 per game in 2017 to 19,975 in 2018. That ended a run of seven consecutive seasons in which attendance fell.

To put things in perspective, that trend started after the 2011 season, when the Lions averaged 36,510 fans per game in the newly renovated B.C. Place Stadium. That now seems like so long ago.

And near the end of the article this : " But a quick check with sources said they also believe the asking price is too high, which brings us back to Woodall and Keith."
