Nanaimo candidate wants Vancouver Island to separate from B.C.

A political party with a strong populist leader appealing to regional interests will likely not benefit from proportional representation as the leader of the Vancouver Island Party is hoping.

This is all I needed to know from the article to dismiss this 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵:

"Richardson, 67, a former employee of the Fraser Institute and supporter of the Christian Heritage Party and Canadian Taxpayers Association."

Well, they laughed at Louis Armstrong when he said he was gonna go to the moon, too. Now he's up there, laughing at them...

different ideas, and that makes him a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 how?

pretty sure he also said free university no? that doesn't sound privately run. Maybe you should read the article.

Also, there is nothing close to the tea party in Canada.

He forgot the Christian Heritage Party. And yes, they are like the Canadian version of the Tea Party. Full of 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 ideas, funded by unknown sources, but clearly very right wing.

Their ideas are stupid and unrealistic, and they use 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 numbers to justify all kinds of things. The "plans" they come up with are completely unworkable.

Good.

it was separate until 1866....

I wonder how BC Ferries would work if they seperated

Travel out half way, and ship-to-ship transfer to Vancouver Island Ferries?

Just going to point out that this also applies to COPE.

Same as the trains, I suppose - don't see them having cross-provincial problems. Unless as a Crown Corp, BC Ferries is restricted to operating within BC?

Or just swim across the Georgia Strait when people leave the barge from the ferry mid-route.

[fredinno]

Washington State Ferries operates its own Ferry Service to Victoria. This entire conversation about swimming across to another boat is ridiculous.

Fares are largely determined and partially subsidized by the province.

And swimming to another boat is totally plausible

Absolutely applies to COPE!

If BC no longer had the island, we could close BC Ferries and sell them for scrap.

He can take a crack at it but I'd say his chances of even getting out of the gate are slim to none.

The island is a bit of a different world though.

I honestly could care less if Vancouver Island leaves. It has a bit of a different culture anyways.

Say, the Island's pretty left wing - wouldn't splitting five GreeNDP seats into a new province create a BC Lib majority for the next five deca.... ohhh, that's what Richardson's going for.

I'd be ok with that.
