Re Calgary Central Library

Few, if any, right angles. Why has this become a trend in library design, of all things? Where do the stacks go? Or is this a bookless library?

She's got like 650 000 books. Why would a building's structure require right angles in order for book stacks to be included? This building is enormous for a public institution in a mid-sized metropolitan area. A good portion of the space is dedicated to study spaces and other types of public space (half of the second floor is a childrens' "Questionarium" which provides lego, virtual reality, a large playground, and a ton of other — apparently (right side of first photo).

They're not book warehouses, they're indoor public spaces that happen to have book lending as one of many functions. I think it makes a lot of sense for Canadian cities to build palatial libraries with big public areas that are nice places to spend time during the winter months when it's gross outside.

The Calgary library looks great.

I wonder how long it will be before Canadian cities start building more large pseudo-outdoor spaces like that Winnipeg example. A lot of them historically have been about showing off exotic plants, which is neat, but I could see them being great places just for having some simulated summer weather. LED lighting and better insulating materials make this more and more practical.

I feel like that phenomenon is well underway. At least it is here with the CORE Mall/Devonian Gardens with the enormous skylight over it, living walls, and tropical gardens. I believe it's the largest indoor public park in the world? Should look into that. Both the new library and the Devonian Gardens have childrens' playgrounds. Then with the amazing new winter gardens being built (one of the few positives of our +15 skywalk system) the last ten years, downtown is actually a pretty enjoyable place no matter the time of year. Brookfield Place, 707 Fifth, Jameson Place, and Eighth Avenue Place have been amazing recent additions to the winter garden/indoor public "green" space, and Telus Sky is going to be a gem.

Since I'm an OCAD student, I have this view consistently of the Artist's Alley site, it's actively being demolished;

Cool, keep us posted GeneralLeeTPHLS. This is one of the better developments to go up in that area period. It will help distract from a few Fuglys around it.

I stand corrected - looks — and functional, even without all those right angles I like so much.

Welp, walking down to the subway this morning, I noticed 85 Broadway is starting up, the homes have begun demolition (This saddens me because of the opportunity these homes had instead of this...but oh well I guess);

Meanwhile, the twins across the street (Citylights at Broadway) is going up, already one floor high in some parts.
And, E2 Condos continues, with some demolishing of the condo buildings;
