Even if it were a 'suburban office park' [it's not], a suburban office park is light years better than a train yard.

The point is, an Amazon moving to a suburban office park node of an inner ring suburb will transform it into something else. An amazon moving to a dirty, empty train yard, will also transform it.

Dude, I'm just going with the flow. My sfh in my suburb is cooler than your sfh suburb because it's inner ring.

People don't walk around Crystal City. There's zero streetlife.

The other three factors are true of any major American metro, urban or suburban. Some random sprawly suburb of Detroit or Dallas fulfills those factors too.

Good urbanity is about small building footprints, streetlife, streetscape variability, and organic growth. Crystal City has none of that.

Agreed. Nobody walks outside there. It's a odd and cold place.

Crystal City is a 6? Haha, that's hilarious. I understand resisting groupthink, but you don't want to go too far in the other direction.

Frankly, I don't see why folks are calling these locations "HQX" anymore....

Anytime a company starts to get super large, they naturally start expanding beyond their home city and setup offices in other locations. This is no different.....

I guess the only difference here is that they are promising 25k/town, IF they ultimately decide they are splitting this thing between two cities. Since we still haven't had a formal announcement from Amazon, we don't really know exactly how this will role out. Maybe Amazon will come out anytime and say 'Ok, we are splitting HQ2 between Crystal City and Long Island. But.... we are feeling generous and have decided to setup 1,000 Amazon jobs in the remaining 18 locations on our list!" In that scenario, the two "HQ" locations would only get 16k jobs..... and that's a big IF on whether they can deliver on that (pending regulations, macro economic conditions, etc).

This is beginning to feel less like "HQ2", and more of Amazon just making a large expansion into other cities across the country. That's nothing new or novel, and they have played everyone over......

Dallas or Atlanta getting HQ2 would be like the Yankees winning another world series.

https://www.thisisinsider.com/amazon-splitting-hq2-reveals-contest-was-a-sham-2018-11

Amazon is reportedly splitting HQ2 into 2 cities, which would prove the whole contest was a massive sham

Splitting the project among two cities would give fuel for critics of the HQ2 contest who called it a sham designed to maximize tax breaks from cities.
Amazon is reportedly close to selecting the winner of its second-headquarters project, known as HQ2.
Or, should I say "winners"?

It turns out, if The New York Times is right, that Amazon is close to agreeing to split its HQ2 project among two cities: New York City and Arlington, Virginia. The two cities will reportedly receive an as-yet-unknown portion of the 50,000 employees and $5 billion investment Amazon promised to winners of the project.

Wait, huh? That wasn't part of the plan.

If Amazon selects two cities for HQ2, as reported, then everything Amazon promised goes out the window. What makes this different from Amazon's presence in other cities where it has offices, such as Boston or Los Angeles?
Will the company refer to both sites, which are hundreds of miles from each other, as HQ2?

Isn't Amazon stretching the meaning of the word "headquarters" here? What's the difference between having a large satellite office in a city and what Amazon purports to call a "headquarters."
There may be a distinction for Amazon employees, but that's unlikely to be the case for the tax-paying public — which will be footing a large part of the bill thanks to the tax incentives Amazon is demanding.

Critics of Amazon's long-drawn-out HQ2 selection process already questioned that a "second headquarters" could even exist. Dividing the project into two equal-size headquarters just adds more fuel to the argument that the entire process was a ploy to pit cities against one another to maximize incentives.

It also breaks Amazon's original mandate for the project that HQ2 would be a "full equal" to the company's Seattle headquarters. If it's separate, it's not equal.

Amazon hyped up its HQ2 investment so much that cities were seemingly willing to do anything for the chance of landing it. Amazon probably at least figured that into its calculus, and when it realized it would be easier to count the cities that didn't jump at the chance to have Amazon in the backyard, the strategy shifted to just maximizing gains.

While we don't yet know what tax incentives were offered for Amazon to select these two cities, nor what Amazon offered in return, we can safely assume it totaled in the billions.

If Amazon is able to get away with essentially robbing Virginia and New York of Billions of dollars in tax revenue and not even offering up in return what it originally promised, what else is it capable of?

DC is worse, it's a sterile government city that feeds on our tax dollars and will be giving more of those dollars for Amazon welfare.

People are furious about Amazon's reported decision to split its HQ2 between New York City and Virginia after years of deliberation

Amazon is closing in on deals to develop its second headquarters in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, New York, and the Crystal City area of Arlington, Virginia, The New York Times reported on Monday evening.

While state and cities have been fighting to win Amazon's HQ2, many people are less than pleased with the reported decision.
Critics say Amazon's decision to split the headquarters make the drawn-out process seem like a PR stunt.

Meanwhile, many New Yorkers are unhappy with the idea of Amazon opening HQ2 in the city, despite Gov. Andrew Cuomo's efforts to win over the company.

So far, reactions haven't been positive on social media.

Insiders have been buzzing about Crystal City being a top pick for HQ2 for some time. However, New York City has been less explored as an option than the Virginia spot.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pushing for Amazon to move its second headquarters to the state, telling reporters on Monday he would change his name to "Amazon Cuomo" to secure the deal.

However, others are less pleased.

"If HQ2 came to New York, with its influx of tech workers, the campus could exacerbate several problems that already plague the city, including high housing prices, overpopulation, and gridlock — all things Seattle, Amazon's home, has seen since the company arrived in the late 1990s," Business Insider's Leanna Garfield reported in January 2018.

^ LOL

This all speaks to one thing: the ego of one man.

Obviously this is one dude just sitting there pushing the buttons. This wasn't some "corporate" strategy. This was Jeff Bezos just looking at a map and saying "lets put it 'there' and 'there' "
