This is great for DTLA...another first class shopping venue for Downtown.

It’s not awful, but he already gave LA his best work with Disney Hall. This project is akin to putting Hollywood and Highland right next to it. It’s a mall, with too much visual stimulation and things stacked on top of one another to maximize a small space. That might be on Related though, not Gehry judging from their handling of this project.

It is good design.

The plaza creates a pathway between the cultural corridor on Grand Avenue and the civic building down below.

The massing, the cladding and the plaza complement WDH quite well.

The nested blocks that rotate on axis even hark back to the original design for WDH.

This isn't a lowpoint; this a return to Gehry's roots.

Some of you are so dramatic, it speaks volumes of your personal homes. This is by no means awful. I'm sure this is going to look great in person. Though it might not be everyone's taste.

Herzog and de Meuron’s 6AM was scheduled to start this year, which is almost over. (And starting on time is too good to be true for LA). I wonder what the hold up is. If anyone has any intel...

My project would be Olympia Towers...and after that would be the W Hotel towers.

Agreed, of the litany of designs they tossed out over the last 10 years, this one ends up getting financing... brutal.

And good luck filling up 200k sq feet of retail on Bunker Hill.

The Equinox gym will take a chunk, the rest should be restaurant-oriented. The courts are across the street then the weekend will see decent cultural/tourist traffic. Traditional retail won't work well there.

Its not the worst design by a long shot, but wish they went with one of the early proposals. Oh, well, another parking lot gone.

I'm pretty sure it was never scheduled to start this year.. Just getting an eir and entitlements would take 3 years

I think the unwritten rule with any sort of project is that anytime a project says that it's going to start on a certain day, add 6 months to 20 years to it and multiple design changes. Look at Apex for example. Most of you remember that ride when it was called Concerto and we were promised Blade Runner like LED screens. Then it halted construction for so many months (remember the giant hole?), changed owners, and names, and well over 10 years later, there you go. Stuff like that is such an LA thing.

That’s every city. And it’s not with every developer, which is also not only limited to LA.

And an even bigger chunk of that is going to be a movie theater.

For the above reasons, and more, I'm not that worried about Related filling out the retail space. They have a broad portfolio across the country, and own several of the chains that will inevitably take space in the project (including Equinox and SoulCycle).

A rendering is just that - a rendering. One shouldn't use it to reach conclusions about what the project's exterior finishes will be, or even its height relative to nearby buildings. I've yet to see the word "stucco" appear in any schematic plans for this project.

I like the design. Has a bit of the wedding cake stacking like old NYC buildings, but with a modern twist. At the very least be thankful it's a different design, opposed to usual glass boxes with weird hats. It also compliments the WDH incredibly well, almost as if it phase II to the WDH. This is an incredible addition to LA.
