It looks like a reflection from the inside of the glass where the picture was taken. Possibly a light on the ceiling? If you look in the water along the shore you can see other reflections on the glass where the picture was taken.

I had the same question at first because it looked like a Tony Stark-type subaquatic docking station.

But yeah, it's likely a light in Rob Ford's office.

More density, more shopping choices, more foot traffic, perhaps a few public garages, more more more.

You can still have fine dining while appealing to the masses.
I disagree with everything in this post.

All modern highrise development, if it isn’t constrained from doing so by the existing urban fabric (as in Manhattan, or the Loop), repeats River North’s design mistakes. And in the West Loop, it would not be constrained by the urban fabric.

And all neighborhoods are niche neighborhoods. Navy Pier is a “niche” location, and so is Times Square - that niche is just fat tourists with kids. People that hang out at Soho House or even Au Cheval wouldn’t be caught dead there.

^ Says you? I honestly think there is a wide gap between the Chicago of 10023's imagination and the Real Chicago. The former increasingly is out of touch with reality and resembles your idea of London (which I'm even willing to wager that the real London barely resembles)

Over here in real Chicago, there are families who go to Au Cheval. And yes, the same guy may actually go to Au Cheval and Navy Pier.

I love Au Cheval, and while I personally don't really visit Navy Pier regularly, I will take out of town friends and family if I am showing the city off. If I had kids, I would totally take them to Navy Pier as well. The touristy stuff in the city have their purpose, and they fulfill that purpose well. I don't see why they couldn't coexist in the West Loop. The neighborhood is a big place, it doesn't have to solely cater to only one specific crowd.

Haha you guys are all very close to right. It's a tiny side table. I definitely could see how it would look like a standing lamp though!

Also, I agree with the two above me. The trashing of Navy Pier has really gone overboard by those who consider themselves locals. It absolutely is a tourist destination, but it's great for views of the city and over the last few years has classed up some. I remember in the early 2000s how tacky it was(although that might have just been the early 2000s everywhere).

As long as Gr333n and its siblings are up, I don't think this thing is going to feel like it's towering over as much - and especially if 352 N Union gets built too. If anything's going to tower over the neighborhood and even these buildings, it would be the 2 buildings Related has proposed.
These figures seem off by some. Gr333n should be at roughly 300 feet, no?

I know here http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/gr333n/32209 it says 299, and from my office it is well above me at the core and I'm already over 200 feet above the ground.

Uhhhh, sorry for the watermark... Does anyone have a good, free, upload site to share photos minus the watermarks?
Stunning - Flickr is a free and easy site to use.

Reminds me of photos of the LA skyline with the mountains behind it.

Also, Sears look — massive. We need another supertall or two nearby.

Yeah, they allow a lot for free - it might even be unlimited for smaller images. And if you pay for their "Pro" account, which is only about $25/yr, you do get unlimited, original-sized uploads.

I've always preferred the skyline from the West. I get why people like the lakeside shots, but viewing from the West is far more dramatic.

The Sears is massive not just for it's height, but also for it's girth. So many recent supertall towers are too skinny to make a similar impact.

^^^Quick note about Flickr for our resident photographers: I've had them for years, and I love the ease with which you can upload pictures...but I think things are gonna change since they were bought out by SmugMug (terrible name). Looks like it will cost a little more for an annual membership. And backup old photos too

Yep Chicago is lucky to have those old industrial dinosaurs. Hudson Yards and Freedom Tower are big too but ugly as hell.
