Curious question: For twinning 17 past Petawawa, is it necessary to reroute the freeway away from (aka west of) the CFB for security reasons? (The terrain’s rougher, though.)

In New Brunswick, both Highway 2 and Highway 7 only border CFB Gagetown. I could be wrong though.

Also, https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4882753.
“He said he first heard about the proposal to twin Highway 17 in 2010 and immediately ‘wanted to get involved,’ but have not heard anything since.”

Didn’t Shoal Lake 39 protest when the shovel hit the ground?

Tbh I don’t understand why PC’s so salty about the fact that the $100M was instead used to twin T Bay Expressway, even though politics was indeed at play. (IMO) People will be happy either way when they see TCH twinned.

The Nipigon Bridge fiasco is truly outrageous though.

The PC's aren't really salty, they are just trying to drive a wedge through the local electorate so that people (wrongly) believe that only the PCs will stand up for the local constituents of Northwestern Ontario.

It's bull, but it's also something that any of our provincial political parties would do. It's just politics.

AFAIK there wouldn't be any additional issues with 4 lanes. Mind you, this could be the time that the base requests it to go around.

The caveat, though, is that CFB might only allow a freeway to cut through, meaning that the EDR will have to traverse the hills west of the base.

Ps: Hopefully OPP patrols that stretch of 17 tightly at all times. An accident can snarl traffic in one direction. People will get off the highway to take a break, totally forgetting that they're in a force base. Next thing we know, headline news says that civilians are being shot dead by the army around the highway, no context at all.

In NB, along Highway 2 around Gagetown, there are signs that say, "Military training area, do NOT leave the highway".

^ That seems unlikely to happen. The right of way fencing along Highway 17 is well signed with bilingual no trespassing signs.

Further to that common sense would suggest that there is additional access control to areas of the base where live rounds are fired. It’s really not in the Military’s interest to have stray gunfire anywhere near the highway corridor.

Yakabuski’s no longer the minister of transportation. Is twinning of TCH dead in the water?

I just got imgur!

Oh well, I'm tired of ranting about stupid politics now. It's time to post some pictures.

https://imgur.com/D68eB9h (Desbarats & Bruce Mines Bypass)

https://imgur.com/nz4Ykf2 (Sturgeon Falls Bypass)

For the longest time (until I saw the actual design), I thought twinning to Kenora will be a new, 4-laned, divided, freeway.

https://imgur.com/vgLQTVO

Can you all see them?

The bigger issue is around Blind River. It will have to go on the north side of Lake Lauzon.

Let me know if you want me to zoom in on certain parts of the drawing.

Obviously negotiation with Mississauga 8 is a must.

Seriously though, is 417 extension to Renfrew dead in the water now that Yakabuski's doing something else? The new minister of transportation is from SWO. Perhaps PC was like, "Oops fixing 401 in C-K and Elgin is more important".

So far, for the design, I'm still missing Massey Bypass.

This is from Espanola to Denlou.
I use ArcGIS. I haven't touched my work for more than half a year now though.
I don't know how to share, yet. Maybe I will figure out. (Plus I'm nowhere near done. I haven't drawn/designed anything for TCH in NWO yet, other than the section from MB/ON border to Kenora.)

This is what I have so far. For segments where MTO already has its own version of drawing, I either don't have anything at all (i.e. the gap between RR 55 <2nd exchange> and Highway 69) or have something slightly different (i.e. Denlou Bypass).

Obviously I got the twinning between Manitoba/Ontario border and Kenora completely wrong. It was the same thing with Cobden Bypass.

At one point, even I thought it'd be better to twin 11 instead, so one would see some drawings around Longlac and near Hearst.

Really, the only new things are the following:
(1) Blind River Bypass
(2) Serpent River Bypass
(3) Espanola to Denlou
(4) Markstay-Warren to North Bay
(5) Highway 11 realignment between North Bay and Marten River (which I haven't finished).

Drawing something like this is actually painful.

Open House for TCH Twinning West of Kenora, Nov 20

http://www.895thelake.ca/news/174601...ighway-17-west

People living anywhere between Whiteshell (or even Falcon Lake), MB and Kenora (or even Longbow Lake), ON should go.

TCH between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay is like A8 (Australia) between Adelaide and Melbourne. Is this analogy appropriate?

In what sense do you mean?

Connecting metros of similar sizes: no
Melbourne: ~5 million / Adelaide: ~1.3m
Thunder Bay: ~120,000 / Winnipeg: ~780,000

Terrain: not really. The Aussie road looks to be over subdued terrain most of the way (farmland, judging by satellite view). It seems more akin to Highway 1 in Manitoba than anything.

Lack of alternatives: no. The Aussies have alternative routes, simply because servicing farms requires side roads.

Type of traffic and volumes: I don't know. I don't have stats regarding what sort of traffic is on this road.
