Its not like this thing is on 9th South and 5th west. It just isn't that far from the rest of the skyline. It would naturally fit within the frame of a photo of the SLC skyline. I'm cool with it. 100%

Will Utah be the U.S. pick for another Winter Games? We'll know by the end of the year

By Lisa Riley Roche@dnewspolitics
Published: October 29, 2018 9:45 pm - https://www.deseretnews.com/article/...-the-year.html

SALT LAKE CITY — It's make or break time for another Winter Games in Salt Lake City, with the U.S. Olympic Committee now expected to name an American bid city by the end of the year.

The USOC is set to pick between Salt Lake City, Denver and the Reno-Tahoe area as this country's candidate to host an as-yet unidentified future Winter Games that could be as soon as 2030......"We're just putting our heads down and doing the work," Biskupski said. She predicted Salt Lake would fare well in polling because "we have such a strong legacy that the support is there."

A poll in November 2017 found that 89 percent of Utahns wanted to bid for another Olympics...According to the minutes of their closed meeting, USOC board members discussed then what the process would look like to narrow the U.S. field. The mayor said Salt Lake only recently received word that a decision will be made before the year ends. But she said Utah is well-positioned in the competition to become America's choice for a future Winter Games...

Much of what is likely to be part the USOC questionnaire is already included in the Utah exploratory committee's 136-page report, that put the price tag for another Winter Games at just over $1.35 billion.

That's less than the cost of hosting in 2002 because the bobsled, luge and skeleton track, ski jumps, speedskating oval and other pricey venues needed for a Winter Games are already in place and continue to be maintained.

The USOC's decision comes as the International Olympic Committee is considering Calgary, Canada; Stockholm, Sweden; and the combined Italian bid of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo for 2026, a choice that will be made next year.

Although Salt Lake was prepared to step up for those Winter Games, the USOC stayed out of running because Los Angeles is hosting the 2028 Summer Games and has locked up domestic sponsorships through that date. The IOC is expected to pick a host for 2030 in five years.

"I think by far our city is light-years ahead of the other cities that are looking at this as far as venues and as far as our investment in those venues," Biskupski said, crediting the Legislature's committment to invest $40 million to upgrade them.

Niederhauser said backers of another bid anticipated waiting longer for a decision from the USOC. "We thought we were going to be in limbo for a while. All of a sudden now we have an opportunity and we're going for it," he said. "I don't think the other cities can do what we can do in such a short time. That may be a little bit arrogant, but it's just the facts."

Salt Lake City mayor says another Olympics is 'ours to lose'

By Lisa Riley Roche@dnewspolitics
Published: October 30, 2018 7:17 pm https://www.deseretnews.com/article/...s-to-lose.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski left little doubt Tuesday about how she sees the city's chances of being selected over Denver and the Reno-Tahoe area as the American candidate to host a future Winter Games.

"It's really ours to lose," the mayor told members of the Olympic Exploratory Committee during a report on the U.S. Olympic Committee's new, accelerated process that will make the choice between the three cities by the end of the year.

Biskupski said as the site of the 2002 Winter Games, "we really have what is necessary to pull off an Olympic event. Obviously, Denver doesn't have everything and neither does Reno Tahoe. But we take nothing for granted."

While the USOC has not specified which Winter Games will be sought, it's likely to be 2030 and beyond. Before deciding, the USOC is expected to conduct day-long site visits to each of the bid cities before Thanksgiving...

New hotels sprout downtown: Big tax incentives for one (CCH), view questioned for another

"An announcement to signal that project is moving forward is expected in a matter of days, maybe as early as Thursday."
(The tower will be Salt Lakes tallest, People "residents" already complaining that it will block their views)

Hopefully good news coming shortly on the CCH. Keeping my fingers crossed.

My understanding about the view complaints were not related to the CCH, but the new Hotel proposal for Gateway and the covering of the west side view of the Depot, Is that correct?

I believe the view complaints were when the CCH was proposed to be to the west of 99 West. We are assuming now that they have moved it to 2nd south and west temple on the convention center property.

Ok, remind me what the zoning is for the CCH if it’s built on the south location? Is it 375’ with the possibility for more with a design review?

It’s part of the newly created overlay that allows up to 375 max on convention center property. More than that is currently not allowed on the convention center blocks, but that could change if the hotel needs to be taller. I doubt it will be though. I’m curious where KUTV gets the idea there could be an announcement “as soon as Thursday.” That’s today.

These specific view camplaints are about the gateway and are warranted. The proposed hotel isn't a tower that partially obstructs a view, while creating new ones. It is a shield that obliterates the view of a historic building replacing that view with that of a fancy motel 6.

The west side of the Depot goes from interesting with potential to Oh my God I am so bored right now.

Depending on what your asking.
In the video that was shown on the news was different from what is posted on their news site. Everything that I mentioned except for the tower blocking residential views is in the video on the news web site.

The tower blocking views portion was on the news broadcast last night.

Yeah the complaints on the CCH are only half waranted. Those people live DT and should not be concerned about height. Ironically their obsession with the height of the building will only lead to a wall that actually blocks their whole view. Instead they should be calling for a minimum slenderness ratio to the building. Yes the building is there but it isn't the only thing I see when I look out my window.

Someone should tweet at Brian Mullahy to get more details. He wrote the story.

Gateway doesn't want to be a mall

Looks like Vestar is coming right out and saying what we all thought - They aren't going to fill up the empty store fronts with new stores and it isn't going to be a mall "ever again"
