Yes, for example the recent fire in the West End resulted in 4 renters I know leaving this city, some going back to Ontario for example, due to no longer being unable to find an affordable alternative here. The crisis for lower and middle earners is raging in the rental sector and anything that doesn’t ameliorate that problem needs to be marginalized.

West End reflects Vancouver in general: regressive, especially so.considering this city's potential.

The original rendering showed a restrained building.
The newer renderings show add-ons that screw up the clean lines.

Still looks good but for those balconies on the west facade. Those really ruin the flow of the design on that side.

I've heard that planning is pushing for every unit to have a balcony now, that may be the reason for those tacked on after thoughts on the west.

more on 1555 Robson

New Vancouver condo tower on Robson Street will have separate lobby for social housing

by Carlito Pablo on October 30th, 2018

Separate entrances for condo and social housing residents are not uncommon in Vancouver.

Last July, city council approved a rezoning for a development that has this segregated arrangement.

It was a 30-storey high rise in the West End. Condo residents have their lobby on Burnaby Street, and people in social housing have to access their homes on Thurlow Street.

Another similar development is coming up, this time on the northeast corner of Robson and Cardero streets.

It’s 28-storey tower that will have 153 condo and 24 social housing units.

The project at 1555 Robson Street by VKJ (Cardero) Investment LP will replace a two-storey commercial building.

The new development will include commercial and offices uses on the ground floor, whose entrances will be on Robson Street.

According to the design rationale submitted by the project’s consultant IBI Group as part of the development application, the “residential lobbies” will be located on Cardero Street.

Goes back to racial integration in the US South I guess.

Funny I'm near the Lido building which is a single development with separate buildings (and lobbies of course) for renters and strata units. Who cares.

The Straight isn't really... "media" as per other forms. More of a blog. What the Straight chooses to ignore / not print and what most folks don't know is that social housing is to be run by a non-profit, which is separate from the strata or the rental component of a mixed building. Having 1 entrance / everything shared is not easy to mange when you have 2 bodies managing. You're essentially building 2 buildings in 1 and it's a non-issue, mandated, really.

Exactly. Just ask any strata that has to share certain spaces with commercial units. Same issues.

Wait till ssiguy gets a whiff of this, he'll claim it's racial segregation perpetrated on the White middle class by the Asian money laundering global elite scum.

The Straight should advocate that all basement suites have a common entrance with the principal residence.

650 affordable homes proposed for Concord Pacific sites in Yaletown
Kenneth ChanNov 02, 2018 12:40 pm

A framework agreement has been reached between local developer Concord Pacific, the City of Vancouver, and BC Housing to construct up to 650 units of affordable non-market housing in downtown Vancouver’s Yaletown district. A target has been set to create homes with at least two bedrooms, so that they are suitable for families.

Six undeveloped sites owned by the developer have been identified for the creation of new housing, with the developer transferring ownership of three sites to the municipal government for the purpose of non-market housing:

450 Pacific Street
990 Beatty Street
1050 Expo Boulevard
The three remaining sites closest to the False Creek waterfront will be converted into market housing uses and remain under Concord Pacific ownership:

1502 Granville Street
431 Beach Avenue
900 Cooperage Way

Ugh. That doesn't seem like many units. I know it's easier said than done but the city should allow high density on those sites. Sell them off and take that money and build units on cheaper land

For example that expo site (4) that should be a 500 unit building with office retail on the bottom.

I think there's another hotel painted similarly somewhere.
