why is there any debating /discussing going on about a fictional LRT on broadway when it was decided years ago that the new line to ubc will be TBM tunnelled under broadway as an extension of the m-line westwards from vcc-clark?

phase I is just to arbutus; phase II completes the line to UBC

Because nothing is a done deal until it is built.

Look at the George Massey Bridge... electrical tower relocation, clearing, and pile driving prep all completed...

Some localized opposition by artists to the SkyTrain expansion down by the Emily Carr University site:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c...e-skytrain-demo-raze-translink-1.4864986

Quote:
Two art galleries that have helped foster Vancouver talent worldwide face losing their home within two years.

Visual artists say that will split Vancouver's visual arts hub, already fragmented by high rents, in the area known as "The Flats."

The former Finning tractor shop at 525 Great Northern Way, where the art galleries are housed, is slated to be razed for the new Broadway SkyTrain line — and both the city and the province say there is no turning back.

But art lovers and displaced artists are making a last-ditch attempt to hold the space in the red building that is home to the Equinox and Monte Clark Galleries.
Can't say I have much sympathy. It was well known for years that there could be further construction for SkyTrain down the line; that's why you were able to secure a home down there.

The now likely prospect of further SkyTrain construction depressed rents, and caused most of the other commercial tenants to move out because they could not run their businesses without certainty.

Why not see if building the building into the new SkyTrain guide way would work, Think about it a art exhibit on rails it could work and be a win win for all.

They've known about the possibility of expansion for at least 15 years. Hell, they've been crying about that warehouse now for at least two years.
Also I don't think Transport Canada allows for guideway construction over existing structures anymore, so you can't drop a guideway column in the middle of the building and call it good.

Maybe the "artists" could do up some performance art wearing snowflakes?

Not sure about Transport Canada, but Evergreen put the guideway right overtop of that White Spot at the corner of North rd. & Lougheed.

I believe phase II was originally supposed to be cut and cover west of Arbutus.

Clap, clap, clap, I needed a sweater to handle all that shade .

But yeah, we all knew this would be extending out west for the past 10 years. Emily Carr needs to put down the paintbrush, pick up a phone, and dial her real-estate agent because we are not about stop a project like this that is actually beneficial for the entire region.

Too bad, so sad; we all saw it coming. They can relocate to Langley and wait for the extension out there.

This is just a sign to future landlords of the gallery not to rent to them if they plan on demolishing anytime soon.

Transport Canada does not have jurisdiction. Only interprovincial or national railways do they oversee.

Interesting. Okay then I got no idea why they cannot just build over it besides the obvious cost of reworking the building for a guideway column going through the ceiling.

Because the extension probably won't be on a guideway column by that point. The tunnel portal – where the elevated guideway transitions to below-grade – is likely to be located where the Equinox and Monte Clark galleries are located.

Well the documents says 700m so from the end of the track from VCC goes to just near the east side of the new Emily Carr building. Which would then go underground and turn towards the GNW underground station.

Which document? The revised structure plan for the campus shows the approximate location of the portal right where the gallery sheds are today. Until a contractor is selected and the detailed plans for construction are finalized I'm not sure we'll know exactly where it ends up, but whether it's where the sheds are, or further east, there won't be anything elevated at that location, so the sheds can't stay once the line construction starts.

Well this document had the 700m guideway:

https://engage.gov.bc.ca/app/uploads/sites/396/2018/09/Risk-Report.pdf

I don't disagree with that location for the portal, since if the guideway ends at around Carolina it would probably end up in the ground near the sheds since it still needs to get down to the ground.

And in 2014 the City revised the structure plan for GNW moving the subway from the middle of the campus to the north parcels. They originally planned on removing some of the BNSF tracks next to the campus.

That was the report I was thinking of. It has a map showing the possible portal location, and another has the existing building used by the galleries. The eastern end if the building seems to be roughly where they expect the portal might be.

I hope they find alternate locations for the galleries, although it won't be easy. The plan has been known for several years, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise. Fred Herzog is represented by Equinox, so IMHO it's important for them to stay in business for that reason alone, but it's not like they could just move the tracks to miss the building, as that's roughly where it'll head underground.

Finding a new location should be easy. There is an entire school of art and design campus on a little island not far away that is basically empty waiting for a new use.
