It’s pretty clear Hector Bremner and Wai Young stole enough votes from Ken Sim that may block him from becoming mayor.

I am pretty sure you could replace all of them elected officials with a Bowl of Petunias and the impact on real estate would be about the same...With the added advantage that we would not have to listen to Bowl of Petunias talk and try to "solve" problems not under its jurisdiction.

Funnily enough most of the Richmond Chinese don’t like the Chinese mayor candidates. Brodie is smart and appeals to them a lot. My mom said it’s like he’s half Chinese.

Btw with Stewart winning but with 5NPA councilors it’s going to be inteesting. To be honest Stewart is believed to be left wing due to being former NDP but he’s always struck me as pretty centre.

I imagine Corrigan had pissed off enough voters to turn them off of him, especially on the topic of development and housing. He just ran into the right candidate that had enough support of various factions within Burnaby to go down.

Well Hong Guo was pretty much the nightmare candidate from hell for Richmond’s mayor. Interesting Richmond is the only city where there was no appetite for change.

I’m incredibly disappointed Ken Sim came so close but didn’t win. He would have been a good, solid mayor. Stewart seems like a showboat and too much in the Gregor Robertson mold. And while the winners may be qualified, it’s embarrassing that out of ten councillors Pete Frye is the only sign of diversity in 2018.

Seems naive to predict the end of developer in Burnaby if you don't look at the makeup of the council.

I find it hillarious that Stewart keeps talking about taking the money out of elections when he likely won just because he got free labour from unions. With that small of a gap it’s going to leave a poor taste in the mouths of NPA voters.

If they’re smart they’ll think about why Corrigan got turfed.

It looks like the entire Green slate was elected save for one Council candidate who just narrowly missed 10th place. I can't believe they don't run a mayoral candidate...

Yeah instead of having all of council and the school board, one Green managed to get in for each instead (vs the rest being part of Team Corrigan).

Thank God Kennedy Stewart got elected. Although Sim seemed like a rather decent character, his plan for housing was too timid in a time when the citizens wanted bold action on the city's most pressing problem. There are many issues the city has to tackle like the opioid crisis, transit/congestion, transparency at City Hall, and rejuvenating the small business environment but the reality was that this was very much a housing election. Ask anyone across all age and income demographics what the single most important issue was in the election and it wouldn't even be close...…….housing. There are still some conservative Westside NPA councilors that Stewart will have to work and compromise with but he definitely has the upper hand. Vancouverites are in no mood for the people who will not take decisive action on housing.

The really great news is that Vision Vancouver has been wiped off the map which speaks volumes about Mayor Moonbeams tepid and even begrudging acknowledgement of the housing crisis. Up until even 2 years ago he was saying that anyone who spoke against foreign influence in the real estate sector was a racist. Vancouverites told Vision in no uncertain fashion what they thought of his developers-backed approach to the crisis and his insulting innuendos about public racism.

No matter if you are happing with Stewart or not, it has been a great election in terms of decimating Vision which is an outcome everyone of them justly deserved.

Before we celebrate, we're still looking at five NPA councillors (most of whom think like Sim), three Green and one COPE. For better or worse, any kind of housing approved within the next four years will probably be five floors or less.

What I predict happening is that the west side won’t be touched and towers will be built on the east side and broadway.

Land prices will soar but condo prices will decrease as densification creates new supply and opportunities for development.

Tbh give that this is the Skyscraper forum, we probably have some of the best candidates possible. Rent freezes would have scared developers away. But the NPA Greens and Stewart are all talking about building much more housing which is great.

Not necessarily. But you will probably see the stupid citywide duplex zoning Vision rushed in get the axe. Likewise you may well see the end of rampant demolition of older rental buildings for luxury condos, even if they contain a token, overpriced "affordable" component.

What’s wrong with that?

5 story buildings across the city would be amazing and make the whole place more livable. Condos look pretty but are pretty inward facing. There’s a need for diversity. More of the same same boring green glass point towers is suffocating.

Um, really? Not that most people still voted center left considering the combined total of Sylvestor and Stewart? Funny how you read things.

But Sylvester wasn’t a splinter from any party as Bremner was. And Wai Young considered running for the NPA. And the NPA got five council spots so it wasn’t some left romp.

Had Ian Campbell stayed in the race the left would have been further fractured.

Yeah, if the right's vote wasn't diluted between the NPA, Yes, Coalition and Vancouver 1st the NPA might have seen all of its council candidates elected and majorities on school and park board.

The NPA's three unsuccessful council candidates placed 11th, 15th and 18th out of 71. Less of a split on the right and they very likely would have been between 6th and 10th, with De Genova and Hardwick both in the top three.

Chris Richardson and Chris Qiu placed 11th and 12th in the VSB race. Again, had they been elected, the NPA would have 5 of 9 trustee spots.

Four NPA candidates placed 8th-11th on Park Board, that means at least two of them would have been in at the expense of COPE and thus a 4-3 split in the NPA's favour.

Kennedy and his supporters should be thankful for a fractured right and the internal disarray in the NPA, not taking the sore-winner tack this morning that Shauna almost cost him the mayor's chair. And I think Ian would have pulled from Shauna, not from Kennedy. One thing that deserves more scrutiny is the very poor strategy by the Vancouver & District Labour Council in who they endorsed and how the endorsement process went. Clearly some progressives who deserved more resources and weren't successful – many labour folks were trying to criticize Shauna for pulling so much support from Vision and NPA alumni, but at the same time, endorsed every single one of Vision's candidates for council, school board and park board. Very strange. And I'm hearing a lot of discontent from labour rank and file over those choices, so clearly the leadership made a lot of decisions without consultation.

Yes, that's a good point, but still, they'll be looking over their shoulders a bit more.
