Some of these might be suicides, some might be accidents. However, sad as these cases are, the trains do come to a standstill during investigation every time this happens, potentially affecting the entire city and the reliability of the system. Calgary' predicament is due to being penny wise and pound foolish

I was trying to find the actual difference. An opinion article claimed 1/3 were suicides, but had no facts to back it up. If that is the number, then that's quite concerning as that's a lot of accidental deaths. Toronto's subway has more deaths, but they are essentially all suicides and of course it's a much larger population

Ottawa will be an interesting comparison. While i expect there will definitely be suicide attempts, and some will succeed, the low floor nature of our system makes it way easier to yank someone back onto the platform. Then again, there's been no recorded otrain fatalities afaik in it's 17 years of operation

Good Day.
Each system, be it LRT, SkyTrain, subway, Metro, etc. has gathered and analysed their own statistics concerning accident .vs. suicide, with the assistance of police and psychologists. Real numbers from most of those analyses have mostly only been alluded to or referenced, not really fully released. For reasons which can mostly be agreed with (copycat, seeming encouragement, a how-to, etc.). It can be stated anecdotally that a significant percentage are or seem to be suicide.
In our case, it is indeed a good thing that we are grade-separated, and it is a good reason to continue to do so, aside from any consideration of car-train interactions (stupidity rampant), political demonstrations and activism in the downtown, or other system delays. Yes, it costs more, and as the article discussed..... it must be decided if the trade-off is desirable/cost-effective. We have already penny-pinched in the determination of no platform door system, at the least for the downtown stations.

As for the T-Line.... IIRC we have indeed had approximately 2 deaths over the 17 years, causing shutdown, and cause never released.

.

They're still using that old-school looking POP logo. That's funny.

Some photos I took the other day.

Blair is where you can currently get as close to a train as possible, at the access to the ped bridge over the Queensway. I still think these trains look a bit unfinished, surely there must be more covering on the top as they seem vulnerable to snow build up, and there must be another external accordion covering on the bendy part that conceals the hoses?

Pimisi Station landscaping is looking good, too.

Awesome pictures! Aesthetically, the majority of the stations look nice.

Bayview and Pimisi look spectacular IMO. I think it will be amazing to start with such a great looking and functional pieces and build the neighbourhood out from there. Let's see some shovels in the ground soon at Lebreton/Trinity! Time for a new arena too!

Good Day.

@Kitchissippi
Good photos.... Thx.
As for the exposure/open structure of the vehicles.... yup, that has been long noted.
And I do believe that what you see in your photo is indeed the final complete vehicle.
I guess they are depending on travel and flexure to keep the parts relatively snow and ice clear.
As always.... <snort> We Shall See !!

Good Day.

An interesting article printed by Hamilton's Raise The Hammer,
Fraser Pollock, 19 October 2018, apparently an Ottawa resident :

With Love from Ottawa: Lessons on Challenges of Upgrading BRT to LRT

One of the key issues with BRT is that you are forced to spend a lot more money to continuously upgrade the BRT right of way as passenger levels grow.

Noticed two new "O" pylons. St-Laurent now has one at the local bus level entrance. It's visible form the Queensway. They've also added a second one at Blair next to the entrance near the bike parking (a few meters south of the first one that had been installed a while back).

That looks like at least a month away from full completion.

That is probably because it is at least a month from when it will be completed.

Hurdman has gained one too on the North side entrance

Those pylons are so simple yet seem like such a milestone!

Indeed. But once again, little to no schedule slack. Which makes the risk of more delays high. I was hoping they'd at least have the exeriors completely finished before the first flurries hit.

It depends how long the delay is until completion. If the transfer date is in January, they could finish the stations by the end of November and still have a month of wiggle room. If the date is even later, it buys them even more time.

The first flurries seems needlessly early a objective. Before the snow sticks seems more reasonable for finishing exteriors, and that’s typically mid December (though it has been earlier). Certainly if they finish the exteriors by mid November, they should be safe.

You would think they would be getting pressured sufficiently on the transfer date. Especially given the penalties being exercised and the fact that the city is not waving the testing requirements. If they aren't, that's the city's fault at that point.

I should think the city would be worried with RTG's lackadaisical approach that keeps forcing an opening further into the winter. We're easily looking at probably an early Feb opening now. Do they want it even further into Feb?

From the looks of it, I am not sure they'll finish the exteriors by mid-November. That's what I meant. As it stands, I am sure some landscaping is being deferred to the spring with overnight freezing now happening.
