80 storeys is definitely in play in the metro now. Hopefully it makes it to reality.
I'm starting to wonder if this Brentwood proposal is involved.

With all the activity in New West a part of me is almost expecting it to be there

My money is on either Delta, Langley, Abbotsford, or Chilliwack.

I bet half my post count on it.

80 storeys in Burnaby next to single-detached homes would be the most Burnaby thing ever.

Broadway/Cambie - Southeast block to be levelled?

Does anybody else know more about this rumour?

I was talking to a retailer on that block (Broadway, between Cambie and Yukon). They said everybody on the south side of the road will be moving out by Spring 2019 as "the whole block is being redeveloped".

Now normally I would have taken this with a pinch of salt. But currently at least 1large retailer there has a "Moving Out" sale going on (and that shop up until recently had been renovating, so it looked like they planned to be long-term tenants).

Just under half of that block is a city-owned office building that is pretty aged, poorly-maintained, and has a sorry state of retailers occupying the ground floor. There is also the Cambie/Broadway SkyTrain station on the extreme west corner of the block.

I can see the potential for this block to be redeveloped to incorporate the Millennium Line intersection, a mixed-use development, and ground-floor retailers. But as of yet, I've not seen anything official. It's a very high-profile junction with major foot traffic.

Maybe there is some weight in this rumour. Anybody have hard facts?

That area should be no stranger to 15-20 storey midrises. I hope no 5-storey lowrises get built here.

My personal bet is New West or Coquitlam. Both have shown an interest/willingness to build tall buildings. Burnaby is possible but unlikely because as far as I know 80 stories is actually already possible but just cost prohibitive due to the additional price the city charges for the height.

Weren't there viewcones to City Hall that prevent anything higher than seven floors up? They've already hedge-trimmed a couple of developments north of Broadway.

Around Joyce station they have the high medium low density circles. I expect a similar design for Broadway stations.

I think the city owns the whole block, and the site is a rumoured to be a future "civic campus". (You know, to house every possible SJW-worthy group they can think of, paid for by some yet-unknown new tax.)

I wouldn't expect much though, given the view cone restrictions in the area, both toward and away from city hell. Hall, sorry.

I almost forgot about that viewcone to that pathetic piece of architecture ontop of the dozens of mountain viewcones. Are all these viewcones just for the rich?

For the City Hall expansion, there is apparently a small area at the Broadway & Yukon corner where a tower would sit outside the view cone.

You're saying Vancouver City Hall is a pathetic piece of architecture? That's certainly not the experts' view, but YMMV.

I’m thinking something that tall would have to be a hotel/residence set up, just like we see with Vancouver’s tallest buildings. I high profile project like this only makes sense in Metrotown. Maybe Brentwood. Then again I could be way off target. Cmon, somebody give us some more...

The viewcone is for the whole City and sets height limits for development of all kinds. It actually depreciates the value and potential of "rich developer's' land holdings within this specific viewcone due to restricting their height and potential as well as increasing development costs.

It sure as hell ain't worth no view cone.

Parliament buildings, I can understand; Vancouver city hall, not so much.

future annex for City Hall is supposed to go on that block. they have been talking about it for over 20yrs. CoV owns all the land in the entire block from Broadway-W 12th Av; Cambie-Yukon

but i also heard from someone that those old dumpy buildings are where some more city staff are moving; more than there already is now.
