I can tell you that as someone who helped originally open the Target at Metrotown, that was driven by the cramped floor space of the area. Per what I was told, Metrotown had about 30% less floor space than what a typical Target would have preferred to have (this also affected the product mix; Metrotown simply had 20% less SKU's than other stores had).
This also affected backroom space; in order to maximize floor space compared to the old Zellers, when Target did the renovations to the store to turn it into a Target, they cut and shrunk the backroom area to make more room. We also had to move back stock of certain product groups to a leased warehouse that was about 15km away on the Burnaby-New West border on North Fraser Way, and we regularly had to run restock runs every 2-3 hours from the off-site warehouse via a 5-ton truck (it was more frequent during the holidays as seasonal backstock was kept offsite).
I will have to drop by and see what Walmart has done to the space; putting the grocery space on the 1st floor probably means either Walmart has massively reconfigured the backroom area to move the grocery coolers and freezers to the first floor, or accepted a sub-optimal layout like what Target was forced to accept (the coolers and freezer for the Metrotown Target was located on the second floor as that was where old Zellers had it, and it was deemed too costly to make that change to move it elsewhere).
I just hope that Walmart replaced the freight elevator and the pallet elevator that was next to it; the pallet elevator never really worked from my 2 years at the store and was just closed off, while the freight elevator was sketchy at best.
