I too attended the meeting last night. I am really old (I admit it) and the old folks I sat beside obviously assumed I was there to oppose it, because cars (what else matters?). They railed against it but I did not tip my hand.

When I started applauding enthusiastically after Jay's impassioned impromptu speech, I think the old lady next to me just about had a coronary!! The looks I got from the NIMBYs around me were priceless!! It was absolutely fantastic!

I too voiced my support to the developers afterwards.

Really glad to see there was some support there last night. Thanks to some of you who attended from this forum. Saskatoon is lucky to have a big Toronto developer willing to take risks in our city. Let's hope that all will proceed with getting approval for this development, units will sell well, and then maybe we can start to talk about Parcel D/E.

I read an article that said getting approval from the city will take a couple months. Does that mean we could see this project begin potentially in the spring? Is that realistic?

Hopefully the smoothness of this tower entices more developers from out of town to look at other building opportunities here. That one lady that said "We are not Halifax" lol.... Um yes we are basically on the way to becoming bigger than Halifax.

I'm really impressed by the number of forumers that made it to the meeting. Well done, everyone! I really wish I could have made it.

I know of other city construction forums for other Canadian cities here on Skyscraperpage that have banded together to form loosely organized pro-development advocacy groups that show up to these meetings and City Council hearings to speak in favour of progressive development proposals and attempt to shift the conversation away from the stranglehold that the NIMBY crowd has on these things.

I hope that this can be the beginning of such efforts in Saskatoon! Let's not forget about the biggest meetings for these projects that are yet to come: the City Council hearings.

I have to say I take a bit of issue with the characterization of the meeting being "split" as written by Mr. Quenneville from CBC. As a person at the meeting, there were definitely some comments about parking and traffic (and yes, mostly from the white hairs...of which I would probably be one if I had hair). However, anyone who was in attendance can attest to the fact that once some of the speakers from the floor at the end of the meeting started to speak in favour of the project, there was an obvious and loud majority that clapped for those comments.

I think the article leaves the impression that there was a pretty even split of those supporting and those not supporting....that was not the impression I left with.

... I noticed that the structure of the meeting gives the complainers all the power, the supporters basicly had to hijack part of the q&a period...
I found this to be the case as well. As I was listening to the first half of the Q&A session I was working over in my mind how to voice my support in the form of a question.

I was relieved when Jay (as his name turns out to be) voiced his support and elated with the reaction it garnered as well as the continued voicing of support.

I was raised in Saskatoon but moved to Toronto for university. Ever since returning I have an intolerance for this pervasive 'Saskatoon Exceptionalism'. I don't mean that in reference to Saskatoon being an exceptional city (because it is) but in that ideas that have worked outside of Saskatoon won't work here 'because this is not Halifax'.

- Long time lurker first time poster. Thank you again for everyone who made it out and a reminder to fill out your comment forms and return them to Brent McAdam at brent.mcadam@saskatoon#ca (replace the # with a .). I have a scanned copy if you forgot to pick one up.

If we were not at the meeting are we able to fill out a form? or was it only for those in attendance?

Nothing was said explicitly at the meeting, nor does the comment sheet mention it. There was a sign-in sheet upon entering but I'm not sure if it will be cross referenced.

You could always email Brent, explain the situation and ask.

If anyone wants it just shoot me a private message with your email and I will send it off to you.

Traffic Bridge

Drove over the Traffic Bridge a few days ago. With big walkways on each side I was surprised to see a cyclist on the roadway. More surprised to see marking showing bikes on the road. I thought the idea of walkways was ped/cyclist sharing. The new North Bridge out of an industrial area is not for trucks. Strange.

I wasn't at this meeting, what was meant by this? Halifax has a HORRIBLE NIMBY problem that I wouldn't expect Saskatoon to have half of.

For context Urban Capital was talking about all the places they have done business in. One of the examples being Halifax which Urban Capital tried to explain had similar concerns about traffic and parking. Then one NIMBY'er exclaimed in her argument 'because this is not Halifax'

I hope that helps

Honestly this is such a bad throwback to the seventies, a rather fine old building with a bad old modernist something glommed on to its side.

It would have been nicer to keep the rhythm of the existing building, window datums and fenestration, in the new addition. I think they could have been more successful with it. The one thing I don't like is the "pixel" pattern wall shown, it looks very simple and low quality so maybe it hasn't been fully designed yet? I think the use of materials pushing and pulling off each other can achieve a better aesthetic rather than a pattern. But probably due to setbacks and window percentages on the sides of the buildings they are trying to keep if from just being a tall blank wall

I just glanced at that north wall while riding on the bus this morning and noticed for the first time the old faded billboard paint for Moyer School Supplies Ltd... thinking its kind of neat to see old advertisements still hanging around from decades ago (just like the uncladded egadz building with Downtown Furniture auction sale ad). As soon as I saw this render first thing I noticed was that the addition completely obliterates it from existence lol. I'm not saying it should remain as is, but surely they can do something better with that side of the building.
