Here's a weird idea I had for one or both of the surface lots on Graham. Please feel free to shoot holes in it, as I'd like to hear other opinions.

When 300 main is done, Graham will have a large "hole" between the residential towers at 300 Main and the True North projects. There is a lack of green space in the area (except for The Forks). Would it be worthwhile to see one of those lots turned into green space for the residents on the area?

Even weirder idea: what about a multi-level green space? Something like a parking garage, but with plants/ paths that could be used year-round? OK I know, the economics behind something like this would be crazy......but it would certainly be a unique feature for Winnipeg.

Thoughts?

I dont think more green space is needed in the area, especially with our climate, 99% of these spaces are not used for 6-7 months of the year. Those lots need to be developed so there is a continual strip of retail, residential and commercial space in order for Graham to truly reach it's potential. Both TN and 300 residents will have access to outdoor common areas. They will also have access to the TN plaza, Millennium library plaza, and further away, Stephen Juba Park, Old Market Square, The Forks, Upper Fort Gary park, Bonnycastle Park, the riverwalk, The Legislative grounds, Memorial Park.

Id rather see the city put more focus on walkability and connectivity between all these green spaces.

Millenium library has a greenspace in the back close to both these projects.

I never looked at the skywalk system that way. Massive missed opportunity to rebrand it as such in 2012 when the NYC highline was new and the darling of hipsters and design geeks everywhere

It's not that weird of an idea, just economics dont work here until the downtown has far more residential density.

I wonder if New Yorkers rallied against the High Line because it takes pedestrians off the street. "It's going to hurt street level retail, take the eyes off the street, and create all sorts of accessibility issues!"

Around the peripheries we have Riverwalk/Bonnycastle, Ledge/Memorial Park, Central Park, Waterfront, and The Forks. That's a lot of "greenspace" already.

There's numerous plazas and parklets in central downtown. Library park. Newer/renovated residential buildings including green/active rooftops. It'd be cool if St. Mary's Cathedral and Holy Trinity used their parks a bit better and opened them up. There was plans for TNS to extend and "elevated" park into St. Mary's property, but it didn't happen – likely because St. Mary's has potential redevelopment plans.

I don't think downtown needs anymore "greenspace" – and if some were to happen, certainly not on Graham, which is becoming the most prominent street downtown in terms of activity and development.

^ Downtown doesn't need more greenspace... what we need is to improve and make better use of the greenspaces and parks that already exist.

Downtown needs people. Those people will use the existing greenspace until it becomes overcrowded. Which wont happen for a long time.

Filling a block with a building that has sitting areas, residential units with patios, CRUs (again, with patios), pocket parks, and dog runs > filling a block with a giant park.
