James South updates:

The new mural is up! I think this one will last longer as it's printed(?) on metal sheets rather than painted on the concrete.

The bus stop at James/Bold still hasn't received a bus shelter.

AND they installed the A-Line route info facing out to the roadway!

How two Hamilton brothers transformed a drab building into giant artwork

The girl in the video said Bardon Street and Tim Hordan's Field. For some reason, I find it really offensive to the ear.

Is that a Hamilton (or Hamildon) thing I've missed somehow? I say Hamil?n, forcing the t-sound down into the glottis - almost a non-sound.

Anyway, good news on the studio...finally.

Everyone used to say Tranna. Not sure what they say now, but you do generally hear a much more carefully pronounced To-ron-to with the final /t/ more stressed than I recall hearing in the past. I certainly hope people aren't saying Torondo, though, because that would be gross...

there is a rezoning application sign up on the SE corner of Stuart and MacNab for a 13-storey residential building. This is directly across the street from the 11-storey residential building already planned. Great location and scale for this spot.
The applicant is Durand Development Corporation - the same folks who are planning a condo project on the Mtn Brow at the site of Chalmers Presbyterian.

I heard rumours they were going to expand Hambrgr, since they own the two shops beside it.

That would make more sense than to re-open FSH and CHP. I'm familiar with both and Hambrgr is definitely the more popular of the two and always was.

Interesting side note, the owners of both of these restaurants if Forge And Foster. They were the owners of the Beverly on Locke... Amongst some other interesting ventures. My gut tells me that we won't see FSH and CHP re-open, but you never know.

Forge and Foster really seem to struggle with running businesses... which worries me.

I don't think you're alone on that worry.

I've seen the City Centre being marketed as a mix residential/commercial space to potential buyers. I personally would love to see a respected commercial buyer purchase the City Centre and try to attract a solid anchor tenant (i.e. The Bay) and then maybe some other niche stores that you can only go to if you went to Toronto or maybe some other big tenants? I'm not crazy about another residential build.

It would be great to see some big name retail tenants move into this space. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't know how well it would do, but a solo Nordstroms would be awesome, or even a stand alone Topshop. An Apple store would help too.

A Nordstrom would do incredibly well. If they opened one in Mapleview right now, people would flock to it in a New York Minute. Heck, if they opened one in the industrial lands ( I know they wouldn't) people would still flock to a Nordstrom. The nearest one is Sherway and a lot of locals from Hamilton go to Sherway just to shop there. It would do wonders, but I can't see that being the first shoe to drop there. Long term I think they would consider it. Short term, I'm sure if Cadillac Fairview came in and purchased City Square, they could get someone like The Bay to come in first and really bring some life into the shopping scene Downtown. Then they could open a top shop, etc. I think Nordstrom and Apple would have to see more growth before committing to opening stores in Downtown Hamilton.

only way we'll see big retailers like that is with 10's of thousands of new housing units. The City Centre should be mixed-use…some tall residential towers, and anchor retail tenants.

Not necessarily. We do have plenty of condo developments and apartment developments that are currently approved or UC. That's literally thousands of residents

I agree Nordstrom and Apple won't be in Downtown Hamilton for a very long time, but I wouldn't rule out The Bay or retailers of that tier in the next 3-4 years.

I have heard rumours that ikea is selling their buildings in an attempt to move into city centers - an ikea downtown would be amazing!
