I believe it and check out this graphic from
Crain's in January 2018:
From
the article:
"New figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicate the total number of private-sector, unemployment-insurance-covered jobs in the city grew 168,000, or 16.6 percent, in the seven years ended in March. The expansion was concentrated in the Loop and the Near North, West and South Side areas adjoining it, where the total number of jobs leapt nearly a quarter. But the action also is showing signs of spreading into outlying neighborhoods."
Even though a big chunk of these are low-paying service jobs, that also means that a lot more people are using those services. And while I'm thrilled the core is booming, this is still very much
a tale of two cities. Thousands of kids on the south and west sides grow up in traumatized, poverty-ridden neighborhoods where unemployment rates are over 20%, and in reality way higher bc so many people have dropped out of the job market. Likewise, so many people are convicted felons and simply can't get hired.
