On another topic, looking at the stations pass by on today's rainy commute made me wonder:

Why do minor stations like Lees and Cyrville have fully covered platforms for the entire length, whereas major stations like uOttawa and Hurdman leave good portions of the platform fully exposed?

I don't think any of the stations have platforms that are completely covered for their entire length.

Both uOttawa and Hurdman have sections where the roof partially covers the trains, so passengers would be able to board without getting wet.

With Cyrville I noticed that there is no glass on the section of the roof closest to the trains (where the structure angles up), so people are pretty much guaranteed to get wet:

At Lees station this section of the roof is covered in glass, however.

It's possible the glass hasn't been installed yet?

There are still various pieces of glass all across the line that have yet to be installed.

It would make no sense to put up a structure like that without inserting glass or something.

Can you tell from the concept art for the various stations where glass is/isn't supposed to be over the platforms?

Tunney's platform canopies have glass. Looking at the renderings, some have it, some don't. Centre platforms have them in the centre, side platforms it depends.

The renderings for Cyrville do NOT show glass on the side canopies; only in the middle. I think what has been built (shown in the pic above) is the finished product.

As shown in this picture, the structure is still there to hold up the light fixtures in places where there isn't glass.

It seems to be some sort of signature design element, even in the underground stations where such a structure wouldn't be necessary to hold up the lights.

Still, they should have used it to provide shelter in all the stations, not just some of them. I guess OC Transpo could always add glass later even if it messes up the architects vision for what it should look like

Not a fan of the canopies in the underground stations. It seems to take up a lot of the platforms.

Hopefully, someday we can go automatic train control and have fully enclosed climate controlled platforms with platform screen doors. Might have been maybe $200-250 million more to do that for Stage 1. Probably not something they could afford. And they probably didn't want to be accused of building overly grand stations.

The trains are already under ATO, and dock themselves to the platform precisely. The only limitation on platform doors is that the city didn't want to spend money on it. I'm of two minds myself on platform doors, I don't like the way they obstruct my view of the train approaching but can see the other benefits. The suicide one is a little different in our case though, as it's much easier to pull someone back onto our low platforms, and the trains by their streetcar heritage can stop sooner than something like a Toronto TR

Good Day.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but JIC :

Looking at the above video made me wonder why they put in that s-curve on the approach to Tunney's? With a centre platform, they could have had one of the lines run straight and had plenty of room for a conventional crossover (not a diamond crossover as was built)?

It's also odd how there's all that unused space on the south side of the trench,* but they mined out a pocket from the north side of the trench to drop in that utility shed.

* I know some of y'all speculated that space might be reserved for a pocket track.

Good Day.

Pertaining to the (much) earlier discussion of high heat related rail distortions....
an interesting detail in the latest C-Line construction update pictures :

https://www.ligneconfederationline.ca/wp...levated-guideway-2018-09-06-768x1024.jpg

Take a close look at the travel rails just before the end of the bridge - a sliding displacement expansion/contraction joint.

EnJoy!
