MARTA plan may boost Atlanta Beltline, cut Clifton Corridor

https://www.myajc.com/news/local-govt--p...clifton-corridor/4SFv7xH58bmjNuKTrj5tcN/

Quote:
MARTA’s priorities may be changing as it finalizes its $2.5 billion plans to expand transit in Atlanta, and the Atlanta Beltline may be a beneficiary, a document obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows.

Amid intense public lobbying, the agency is considering reducing – but not eliminating – funding for the Clifton Corridor light rail line from Lindbergh Station to Emory University, according to a presentation MARTA made to a group of community stakeholders in a closed meeting Thursday. It also may eliminate a proposed bus rapid transit line along Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta, but would still build a light rail line along the route.

Money from those projects could be reallocated to transit along the Atlanta Beltline and to the rehabilitation of existing MARTA rail stations, according the presentation. The document did not say how much money would be shifted among the projects, though it’s unlikely it would be enough to complete the full 22-mile Beltline light rail loop, as many supporters want. MARTA’s preliminary plans, unveiled in May, were to build just a third of the proposed transit loop, but supporters have pressed the agency to build more.

MARTA Board of Directors Chairman Robbie Ashe confirmed agency leaders met with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Wednesday to discuss the transit expansion. He also said no final decisions have been made about the list of projects.

Switch Crosstown Midtown BRT with Campbellton Rd LRT, and it's the right way to do things.

That's my feeling as well. This is much better for the city than what they were originally proposing.

I keep hearing the steepness/grade along North Ave may be too much for LRT. Honestly, I'm fine with BRT so long as it dedicated lane transit. I want to enjoy the Campbellton LRT, but the density in the area is just so meh right now and doesn't seem opportune w/the sale of ft. mcpherson for a film studio. That said, depending on how the LRT routes are intended to travel, slipping from Campbellton directly to the southside trail could serve as a great east/west connection for the city.

I'm really curious which lines will be continuous and which may exist as just a segmented portion.

Why is LRT along the Beltline so expensive? They already have the ROW.

Strange to hear that as it's part of the original Streetcar System Plan put out by the Beltline as going along North Ave. You would have thought that would have been considered by ABI when putting together that plan.

AND underground infrastructure in place! Maybe it's the new bridges that would be required?

New bridges and potentially tunnels. General note is USA is averaging $35 million per mile for LRT. Seattle's costs were $175mil per mile. I believe our numbers look much larger because we're including O&M in the project costs.

Really wish they had added a Krog infill station...that would have gone nicely with the Lightrail along the Eastside trail.

Wait it minutes! What about MARTA rail expansion? I don't see anything. What's going on?

No HRT expansion included, probablu because of how expensive it is per mile. We got a lot more bang for our $2.7bln without HRT

You have to remember this is for the City of Atlanta, where heavy rail expansion was never a big factor. Most of the heavy rail expansion is for outside the city's limits. In addition to what Street Advocate said.

SN: And technically the light rail lines will be "MARTA rail," so....

Other counties need to vote for a MARTA tax and pay up if they want a marta rail expansion into their suburbs. Only the City of Atlanta voted for a tax increase in order to fund the expanson of transit inside of the city limits.

To add, we are likely getting between 21-29 miles of LRT throughout the city, accompanied by 13 miles of BRT. Add in all the more frequent bus routes, getting around the city is about to become a helluva lot easier.
