This almost could have been remembered as the UDP Meeting that never happened, as it nearly started off with a disaster. Maybe the applicant team was feeling a little rattled, as the panel had just finished imposing a long list of recommendations on a proposed hotel on Broadway, or maybe everyone was feeling a little off from the hot weather.
Perhaps the heat also effected whoever added the lights to the model, as the power cord was hidden under the base. This led to a tense couple of minutes as the applicant team had to tilt the large model over the table and try to fish the cord out. Ultimately, they were successful and the model, worth ten of thousands of dollars, did not become a failed seismic experiment.
Quickly regaining their composure, the applicant team explained their design rational, indicating that, despite the large design changes, this building should be viewed as the second half of One Burrard Place, which is already under-construction. These two buildings are designed to share the same amenity areas through connections in the podium, and will even tie together their 9 levels of parking. When the panel enquired as to whether a grocery store was planned in the retail level of this building, the applicant revealed that the original plan to host a Meinhardt Fine Foods store in One Burrard Place was still intact, but they hoped to locate a complementary food service in this tower as well.
