Vancouver had a mostly nice day, sunny now, 16°C, and 18°C inland, wind 6 km/hr. The suggestive forecasts of gloom and doom have not all materialized.

So Toronto is forecasted to dip to 9C on Friday. That would be the first time that we dip below 10C since May 21. So 123 consecutive days of the temperature never going below 10C. Pretty crazy streak!

A crazy low of only 4C tonight! But a result of crystal clear skies with a million stars. Then two sunny highs of 20C then a cool down and wet:

It was 22 this morning and 15 this afternoon. Pretty dramatic for a cold front to move in. It's autumn, now. Leaves are even turning colour.

29C with a humidex of 35 and sunny! The official high of 29.1C was once again enough to break the record (28.9C in 1942). 3rd straight of record high.

Low of 20C this morning. Downtown Montreal with a low of 22C.

The warmest low in the last 24 hours is Long Point, ON at 22.1C.

The warmspot was Bathurst, NB at 31.7C.

EDIT: The last official measurement of water temperature on Lake Champlain in its northern part is 24C.
This means the St. Lawrence river around the island of Montreal must be around 25C.

EDIT 2: Screenshot of the weather at 7AM EST this morning... is it really September.

Three cruise ships in port today for this —. THREE. At least one came from Halifax where it was summer when they left . Today is probably going to be one of the most destructive to our reputation in the cruise industry haha.

Oh I don't know Signal, all you'll be doing is confirming all their previous biases regarding Canadian weather. Nothing like positive reinforcement!

The high in Moncton today will be 25C at noontime, then the cold front moves through and we'll lose a good 10 degrees by 3 PM.

They should say how long the records have been collected for. The records at YHZ don't go that far back because the airport opened in 1960. If the records go back 50 years there's a much higher probability of hitting a record year, all else being equal, than if they go back 150 years.

Another thing that happens with these thresholds is that maybe one year had 10 days that hit 29.5 instead of 30. A minor change in the temperature can affect the counts a lot, while it would have only a small impact on the average.

Either way this is probably pretty substantial evidence that hot summer weather is becoming more common.

TODAY WAS SO MUCH — I'M TOO ANGRY TO SLEEP. lol But damn, that was a frigid, miserable day. No snow here but it did make it MUCH farther east than expected. I believe it was just outside Gander that the nearest flakes were visible.

I've been looking at generating some climate charts from hourly observation data. The hourly data's available for a wider variety of stations and for longer periods of time than the monthly or daily data.

Here's a preview of mean temperatures for Halifax Dockyard (2004-2018) vs. the monthly YHZ means. I calculated the mean of every hourly sample available on a given calendar day (the YHZ data is computed a bit differently but it is a baseline).

Eventually I want to have daily highs, lows, means, and the extreme highs and lows for every calendar date. The daily mean is the most compact representation of the average though, and it would be easy to plot daily means together for many different weather stations.

Edit: here's a second version. Note that the min/max lines here are the extremes observed on the given date ("record for this day"), not the mean maximum or minimum on a given date ("normals").

26C with a humidex of 33 and mainly cloudy! We still had some sunny breaks.

Low of 21C this morning (humidex of 27).

The warmest low in the past 24 hours is Long Point, ON at 20.8C.

The warmspot was Windsor, ON at 30.3C.

EDIT: In the upcoming months, the difference between Southern Ontario/Southern Quebec and the surrounding regions in Eastern Canada will be very noticeable. The St-Lawrence valley as well as the Great Lakes provide a microclimate.

Sudbury, North Bay and Quebec City all in the single digits after the cold front while Southern ON/QC should still have highs above 20C for a few more days even after the cold front. In fact, it is the only area in the country that has 20's in their forecast. Kind of depressing for September honestly.

Feel like at 2PM.

Here's another version with the standard average highs and lows for each day of the year.

This one is pretty expressive and better than those Wikipedia style climate grids although I could generate those too.

The seasons are visible pretty clearly. There are about 3 months of 20 degree or more highs, and nighttime lows drop below 0 from the beginning of December until the end of March.

-20 wasn't recorded at all at this station during this 14 year period and winter days with highs above freezing were common.
