Critical patients already go to VGH and will mostly continue to. Organ transplants and such can be dealt with via the existing helipad and ambulance as the few minutes difference isnt as urgent. Let's just be patient and see how things unfold.
There must be a way to make it work as the helicopter approach at St Michael's here in downtown Toronto is surrounded by far larger buildings than Citygate but it sees very frequent helicopter service.

No. In March when Jim Pattison announced his donation.

From the application:

PS - good to see the Malkin Connector in there as "New Arterial St.".

View cones over the site prevent a tall tower - so short, squat and crowded is what you get.

I've gotta say, the scale of this project has exceeded my expectations.

Where's the parking?

You have to wonder how many current St.Paul's employees walk to work from the West End or Downtown South. There is certainly nowhere near the amount of rental accommodation close to the new campus, unless they level the houses in Strathcona.

Read the documents. Every building has underground parking space.

In addition, there'll be two blocks' worth of midrises once the viaducts go, and it's a five minute walk or less to the SkyTrain. No problem whatsoever.

From the document linked in the post above this one: “Parking entrances are located on the least busy streets: Station Street’s north extension and the private Healthcare Boulevard. The North parcel will be accessed from Prior Street, which will be downgraded from an arterial street once New Arterial Street is constructed.”

Please tell me these aren’t the actual street names! How simple and boring!

Ya it's closer to Skytrain, and the parking won't be competing with other downtown destinations the way it is now.

I suspect Pacific Central's bus area will become more active and Translink will change routes to accommodate. Also by the time it's open, we could have a half-developed NEFC, and McDonald's & parking lot area by Main and Terminal could be developed into housing, etc.

Would you prefer Insert Name Here Avenue or Placeholder Road? Give them a break, it's still a WIP.

Now if one ends up getting named after Gregor, THEN we riot.

Bus report here. Ten bucks on TransLink rerouting the 8 or 19.

From an urban enthusiasts point of view, the St. Pauls project will a game changer for Chinatown as it will greatly increase the daytime population. The new businesses drawn there will improve the run down and tired looking buildings.

So much potential in Chinatown. It will eventually be one of Vancouver's best and most interesting neighbourhoods, along with other parts of the DTES.

Chinatown is already the hottest neighbourhood in Vancouver right now, this won't help though. It will bring more people but as the rents start increasing we'll actually see the cool businesses move somewhere else in a few years. Just like what happened to Gastown. And I don't see the next jump being to the DTES. Maybe Hastings/Sunrise but who knows.
Still great to see this move forward. The whole city benefits from having a better hospital.

I would describe Chinatown as a functional neighbourhood, but it still has a long ways to go imo. Chinatown still needs more residents and more daytime population (workers). It's still pretty much deserted at night and not terribly busy during the day, at least compared to the other so called cool neighbourhoods.

There's a lot of retail opportunities in Chinatown (every street is a retail street). Surely there is room for lots of different types of businesses.

I thought you agreed that Chinatown needs more development, judging by some of the comments you've made regarding the CoV's backtracking on the Chinatown Plan.

Yes Chinatown needs more development and I was a big supporter of the old plan. But don't confuse creating a better neighbourhood with being the cool "it" area they sometimes go hand in hand but not always. This hospital will help the neighbourhood but all those funky places that have opened up in the last couple of years won't be around to see it.

Well if you look at the plan there are expansion wings for the hospital and the research building but I highly doubt anything would be allowed taller than what is being proposed. There's the viewcone and then if a helipad is on the main building unless they build a new one on a taller tower it would probably be an issue.

Bringing thousands of high paid jobs into an area will have an incredible effect on everything from retail to real estate.

It will be a giant drain out of the west end though.
