These buildings / homes are really impressive to see in person, so if anyone has some free time this coming weekend, this would be a great way to spend some of it.
September 5th Public Hearing – Confusion along the Arbutus Corridor, Honouring Vancouver’s Past While Growing its Future, Is this the best Industrial Building the City has ever seen?
As the August slowdown comes to an end, this meeting could be seen as a warm up for the September 18th Meeting which could make Vancouver’s most (hedge) walled-off neighbourhoods far more inclusive. In the meantime, this week brings us some small growth and a bit of amenity space to support it.
The first item is a heritage designation that will allow a locally grown jewellery company the extra space they need to stay in Vancouver. The next two are simple approvals of area plan policies that have seen plenty of public consultation, and are rather underwhelming. The last item allows for the growth of the Jewish Community Centre so it can provide new housing options, new services for neighbourhood residents, and enhance the ability to honour the history of the people who have grown it.
Edit: An earlier version of this post incorrectly listed the hearing as September 4th, the correct date is September 5th.
Backlash Expectations
2040 Columbia Street (Lougheed House) Heritage Designation – Very Low – Only one public comment during entire process
Amendments… for Townhouse Areas in Cambie Corridor & Grandview-Woodland – Low – Wide support at open house events
Amendments to the Arbutus Corridor ODP… –Medium – a lack of Information and resistance to selling city owned lands
950 West 41st Avenue (Jewish Community Centre) – Low – Strong community support and plenty of new amenity space
Interested in Vancouver 's plan to softly increase housing diversity in Kitsilano and Cedar Cottage? Whether you want your kids to live nearby, or want to live in the area yourself, make sure to attend the info session today or tomorrow, & speak up on Sept 18th.
Forgot to post this yesterday. The Kitsilano event was very busy with over 200 attendees.That said the Cedar Cottage open house is scheduled for today, so there still a chance to attend one of the sessions.

Most of those zones could probably support duplexes and walkups - did the crowd seem like it would've been receptive to that?
4464 Dunbar Street - DP-2018-00363
IBI Architects in conjunction with Qualex Landmark Ltd. has applied to the City of Vancouver for permission to develop at this site a 5-storey, mixed-use building. The proposal includes the following:
48 market strata dwelling units;
1009 m² (10,859 sq.ft.) of commercial area;
Building height of approximately 16 m (52.9 ft.);
Total floor space area of 7,145 m² (76,907 sq.ft.); and
Two levels of underground parking accessed from the lane with a total 129 parking spaces.
Under the site’s existing C-2 zoning, the application is “conditional” so it may be permitted; however, it requires the decision of the Development Permit Board.
A Community open house to be held from 4:45pm - 7:45pm on Thursday, September 20, 2018, in Room 208, Dunbar Community Centre at 4747 Dunbar Street with the applicant team and City staff available to answer any questions.
I like how for those Kitsilano and Kensington meetings that they used the language "Housing Choice". That's language I think people can easily get behind as opposed to 'densification'
UDP Approves Arbutus Centre Revision in Record Time
4188 Yew Street – Arbutus Center Block A
Hannah and I hate when the city schedules multiple events on the same day as, is in order to experience both, we often have to split up. So I was curious if I would have enough time to attend this UDP meeting and join Hannah at an open house in Kitsilano. In order to find out, I took the time to look at the meeting’s agenda which is posted on the city’s website about a week before the event. My initial reaction of “Oh dear god why!” scared the life out of Hannah. After almost a decade of going through the rezoning process, I couldn’t understand why on earth the applicant was now applying for a revision to their Block A section of the Arbutus Centre, which is already under construction.
