Didn't there used to be one down on George as well, just east of the corner of Dalhousie?

I would surmise that the Market/Rideau area beer stores would generally serve people without cars, and that most people with access to a vehicle in that part of Ottawa probably buy their beer in Hull/Gatineau.

Lol this brings back memories.

When I was in school still and living in Sandy Hill, my parents came for a visit, and I took them in the minivan to that beer store. My dad hopped out and went inside, and the van was surrounded by so many sketchy looking people that my mom locked the doors immediately. Handy location, but a magnet for a certain type of citizen.

This is a problem. Every bottle-return site is too busy and disgustingly filthy.

Well, a certain portion of the clientele is likely car-free-by-choice urbanites but I suspect the bread and butter is likely low and very low income people and students as you say.

And has been mentioned, the bottle returns vs. sales ratio of transactions is probably out of whack with what the Beer Store wants to see.

The SQO outlet in Vieux-Hull closed down, too, not long after renovating.

The LCBO on Rideau/King Edward has a bit more parking for customers but I can't imagine very many people were physically driving and parking at the Beer Store on Rideau. Majority of people using the store had to have been locals.

I'm guessing this decision to pull out is a combination of clientele and a raised lease in the hopes of redeveloping the property. Guess we wait and see what happens to the property and if Beer Store re-enter the Market any time soon.

Does anyone know what's being built on the S/E corner of West Wellington and Parkdale? Do we have a thread for that one?

True but that SAQ was not a go-to place for Ottawans buying beer. 99% of the beer sold in Qc is not bought at SAQ. Unless you want specialty imports.

Posted this in the High Tech thread, but Amazon is closing their R&D office in Kanata.

Very disappointing.

And I don't understand why it was not more popular for that. The location was perfect, right at the foot of the Alexandra Bridge.

If you've gotten that far it is only a few more minutes to Costco.

SAQ Dépôt is not really a beer place. It's a wine and spirits place. There are several dépanneurs in Vieux-Hull where you can buy beer at decent prices (compared to Ottawa). And of course if you're in a car Costco is only 5-10 minutes further.

As I mentioned before SAQ only sells specialty and imported beers. There aren't many bargains to be had there AFAIK.

The SAQ Dépôt that was near the Alexandra bridge was relocated to Chemin de la Savane which is right off the A-50.

About 95% of the floor space is devoted to wine it seems. They offered "laddered" discounts depending on how many bottles you buy.

The Ottawa Film Office is proposing a film studio on NCC land. This would be huge for the city.

NCC considers film hub in the Greenbelt

Matthew Kupfer · CBC News · Posted: Aug 27, 2018 5:19 PM ET | Last Updated: 5 hours ago

The National Capital Commission is launching consultations on a proposal to develop a $40-million sound stage campus and creative hub on the site of the former Greenbelt Research Farm.

The NCC is considering a proposal submitted by the Ottawa Film Office and TriBro Studios to build the project on the land at 1740 Woodroffe Avenue, across from the Nepean Sportsplex.

The proposed 9.86-hectare project would create more than 500 new cultural sector jobs in TV, film and animation, city officials said in a press release Monday.

Bruce Harvey, Ottawa's film commissioner, said not having a sound stage has been a barrier to the local industry.

"The industry over the last few years has seen some remarkable growth. All of that growth has come from dramatic series, the key about dramatic series though is they require sound stages, Harvey said.

"Otherwise, you have someone set up on your block for the next seven years with film trucks trying to film the house that they need or the police station they need. It's very critical to have a sound stage so that you can build your sets inside that. You have a controlled environment and you can shoot for 12 months out of the year."

There has been talk about a sound stage coming to Ottawa since 2012.

Harvey said the location works in part because of its close proximity to the existing talent pools at Algonquin College and in the animation industry, as well as easy access to the Ottawa international airport and nearby trains at Fallowfield Station.

He expects the proposed film studio would have enough space for one or two series to shoot at the same time and each he estimates could bring in about $20 million to the local economy.

He said there's been a spike in demand and industry research from Film Ontario said $260 million worth of sound stage work was refused in the province because of a lack of capacity.

"If we could get a small portion of that to come to Ottawa and to stay here, the industry would grow exponentially," Harvey said.

Mayor Jim Watson said some kind of development like this had been in the works, but now the right partner is present to follow through.

"They think we have the right geography, the right talent pool and it's really the piece of the puzzle that's been missing for a long time to bring us to the next level, on par with cities like Toronto and Vancouver," Watson said.

The Greenbelt Research Farm was built by Agriculture Canada in the 1960s and acquired by the NCC in 2000, the city said. Since then, many of the buildings have remained vacant.

Because the land is part of the Greenbelt, the city and the NCC are arranging for the "naturalization" of a former golf course in the Lester Wetlands to offset the studio's impact.

"The golf course is now out of business," said Watson. "That will be twice the amount of green space as what we're taken from the Greenbelt for the film studio."

"Most of the land [for] the film studio was not green space, it's paved roads. I think there's 17 kilometres of paved roads and dozens of buildings, so we're not actually taking pure virgin green space."

Watson said the sound stage will not cost the city money and the studio will be leasing the land from the NCC.

The NCC is asking members of the public to provide feedback on Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. at the location of the proposed project.
