Being called Black instead of African American is not racist. Just like calling someone white instead of Caucasian doesn’t mean you hate or dislike whites. I’m a proud Morehouse Graduate. And one thing you should know about Morehouse is that it is a HBCU. Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Period. Honestly to be hollering African American, doesn’t make as much sense as we think. Africa is a continent. Be it North, or South Africa, presents dramatic and drastic differences. Hopefully this can resolve some of this Black issue on here.

Yeeeaaasss! Morehouse in the house! I’m a McNair Scholar from GSU. We cohost the SEOPP conference with Morehouse. As a white male, I don’t care what people call me, as long as they don’t call me late for dinner. I do find that especially with the millennial generation they prefer Black, as opposed to AA. 1. Not all Black people are African-Americans. 2. It’s a throw back to the 60s and Black power. I usually ask what people prefer.

I find it confusing as someone who tries to be conscious and sensitive to race to call a person of color black. Immediately when you identity someone as black, as opposed to, African American, you are distinguishing them based on color - not origin. If you think about it, racism towards blacks/African Americans is more about color than origin.

What do you call a black French-American? Or a white white guy from Chad or South Africa? As a young white person, it has always felt weird to me to call black friends African-American as if they are somehow less American that you or I.

In my mind, there are only a few instances in the real world where you would need to identify someone by their race. However, people think they constantly need to label a person's race.

Sorry to hear about that. I've definitely been in a similar position multiple times, so I can about imagine how you're feeling.

The most frustrating part is that they strung you along with all of those interviews when they likely knew the position was earmarked for an internal candidate (thus you pretty much wasted your time and money).

It sucks, but it was all out of your control. In any event, good luck with the other 2 positions.

I agree that the constant need to label someone is excessive, but you know that wasn't the response I was trying to solicit.

This is my last post on the other subject, then I'm done with it. Hopefully some more Amazon HQ2 news comes about so this off-topic discussion not based on facts can end once and for all (or, at the very least, a moderator will delete / move these posts).

1. The term that was used by the individual in question was "blacks," not African-American or black people. There is a big difference, because the term "blacks" is only used when someone who's not African-American is making a negative but inaccurate connotation about black people in general (as though they're attempting to dehumanize black people as if they're "less than" other ethnicities), which does comes across as racist. It's the same as when, back in the day, white people would refer to black people as "you people," or when people refer to undocumented Mexican immigrants as illegals. This is further proven by the fact that they didn't use equally dehumanizing connotations when mentioning Asian people or White people.

2. As an African-American male, just speaking for myself, I don't appreciate when white people try to explain to me what is racist and what isn't racist. You're obviously free to do so and I can't stop you, but just know it comes across as tone deaf as well as complicit in the racist things people do when you try to brush them off or downplay them. Once you've taken a walk in my shoes, then maybe I will hear you out.

I have long held the same view. African American is a term which signifies a black person is more African than American.

Time posted an article stating Texas is the most likely state for HQ2. This is click bait IMO. MD won't get AMZN. DC is not a state. NOVA are counties: Fairfax and Arlington County. Journalists rehashing the same locations as front runners (ATL, NOVA, Boston) draw less readership. However, I read the article anyway. If HQ2 ends up in Atlanta or Chicago, I will likelt regret not purchasing homes there.

I believe in nuance. I initially thought ATL was 50+% likely, NOVA and Raleigh the alternatives. I now strongly lean NOVA with Raleigh having a 1% chance. Eastern time zone is key for Amazon. I can accept ATL may win HQ2: Talent, airport, ETZ, climate, beauty...makes it highly competitive. It is a premium city with key indicators for continued commercial growth. I made a cash offer on a house in February located slightly northeast of downtown Atlanta, but was outbid. I do know HQ2 search is a ruse. HQ2 benefits me only in my fairly expensive house here appreciates faster.

I think you mentioned you work in tech. (When) HQ2 comes here, you should see your total comp tick up within the next 3 years do to competition for talent.
