They are building a steel structure on the Queen street side of the Sun Life building between Parliament accessible and SunLife entrances. It has nothing to do with the subway but I'm not 100% sure what it is. Pump out or patio canopy for a restaurant maybe? The heck is that tower thing?

The Downtown Moves plan envisioned a lot more ground floor spaces opening up onto Queen Street, like restaurants and patios, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a restaurant or coffee shop with a patio.

A couple of hotel restaurants over on Albert Street have increased ground floor restaurant space in the past year or two (Sheraton and Albert at Bay). I guess there's demand for it in the area. I think it's a good idea, it helps increase pedestrian presence on evenings and weekends as well as daytime.

It's going to be one of those "sign" restaurants

I am curious what the building is that went up near the Gloucester Center? It looks like it's around 20 floors, and it is pretty much the tallest building in the east end of town (east of the 417/174 split. Are there others like it planned in the future? Would make the city's skyline even more visible when viewed from the 417 southeast of the Hunt Club interchange...

What's this at Metcalfe and Gloucester? A parking lot?

The application development mentioned a park after the owners of the London Arms decided to apply for demolition control. It does have me worried tho... it seems like all construction has completed...

If this continues for the foreseeable future, someone should really bring this to the Somerset Ward councillors attention...

Heaven forbid there be a parking lot downtown. Have any of you tried to park downtown between 8 and 2?

I tried not to drive downtown between 8 and 2 and it's been okay. Luckily there are better ways to get there other than by a single occupancy vehicle and it will only get better.

In general I don't think you can find much support for downtown parking on a forum for people interested in urban planning, skyscrapers and transportation, as surface parking is a major enemy for all those things.

Actually it's generally fine. You just need to bite your tongue and enter a parking garage for $25.00.

I'm surprised this one didn't go straight to construction of whatever's next. Why would a landlord choose demolition over continuing to take rental income if the end result is a brownfield?

I don't think that was an option, wasn't the building condemned? I've been told that the City's standard practice is to only issue demolition permits once there's a building permit to minimize the numbers of vacant lots, unless there is a threat to public safety or other strong justification for an exception.

Heaven forbid indeed - surface lots are a cancer on cities.

I do think some of the commuter parking lots need to have a policy (perhaps mandated by regulation) of having 5% of their daytime spots not be made available until after 9am, and another 5% not made available until after 10am. Ditto for city park and ride lots. That way, there is some parking capacity available at mid-day instead of every last spot being grabbed by morning commuters.
