As politically incorrect it is to rip out trees in a park this is a better use of the space. It will increase usage of the park with now more reasons to go. Having a big open field of grass allows for lots of other activities too... like baseball.

It is sad to see those mature trees go, but to be fair the huge gravel surface that was there before was sterile and something had to be done to improve the space. I wish they kept the canal though.
