Why is that bridge so.... big? It's length? It just seems so much bigger and more visually intrusive than the Corkstown or Adawe bridges.

Corkstown is in a location where the canal is much more "trenched", so minimal approach ramps (none on the Queen Elizabeth side) were required to increase the height of the bridge versus the canal. The corkstown location is also much narrower than the fifth-clegg location.

The Adawe bridge is built in a part of the Rideau River that has no navigation requirements by boat, meaning they could build it just above flood levels and maintain a low profile.

Flora Footbridge has been chosen as the name for the new crossing being built between the Glebe and Old Ottawa East.

Council on Wednesday was unanimous in voting to name the bridge after the late Flora MacDonald, who represented Kingston as an MP in the 1970s and 1980s and lived in the area where the bridge will be located. She died in 2015.

MacDonald, the first female foreign minister, was considered a bridge-builder in her career as a politician and humanitarian.

Coun. David Chernsuhenko, who represents the area, said the city is choosing Flora Footbridge as the name because there are many other pieces of infrastructure in Ottawa named after a MacDonald.

Residents were invited to suggest names for the $21-million bridge between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.

The 123-metre-long bridge, which is funded by the three levels of government, is scheduled to be complete in summer 2019.

This is a little confusing give Flora Street isn't THAT far away.

They need to accommodate some 22-feet tall boats coming through and Corktown has steep banks going for it.

So yeah, effectively a couple of Millions from our scarce pedestrian/cycling budget is being spent so luxurious yacht owners from out of town can have some fun time on the Canal.

Got it. Knew there had to be a reason.

The millions in this case came from the province I think. IMO, any additional cost due to navigational requirements should have been paid by the feds, as the level of government responsible for marine navigation.

Looks great! As for the extra cost for the span heights, there is no other option. The Feds might make the rules but they should not have to pay for it. There are all kinds of federal and provincial regulations on how you can and can't build your house but don't expect the government to fit the bill for that either!

As for the size and cost. The span is far greater than the footbridge at Somerset, that alone is gives reason to the size. It's going to be a part of this city for a long time. That area of the canal, given it's width, will likely evolve into an "event" centre during winterlude and there will be far more people using it. Plus during events at the stadium, I would think there will be far more people crossing it at one time than the more casual use at Somerset.

Looks like they are exactly the same length? 123M.

It's tourism. They come here and spend money.

It's a navigable waterway. The city can't just block it off. Also I would not describe most of the boats on the canal as luxury yachts.

My point is that the money shouldn't come from the city limited pedestrian and cycling budgets. We had to postpone some other projects to build this bridge.

Good Day.

For what this particular project is worth (and it IS worth it), enjoy it.

It will be the very last we see of virtually anything / everything for alternative transit and mobility (apart from Phase 2 LRT) for the foreseeable future.

All we can do now is prepare EAs and TPAPs for future needs/plans/wants/desires (almost entirely on our own dime) in order to have stuff 'shovel ready' and ! immediately ! contractable - IF - and when funding systems come available.

Good Day.

The main study still remaining to report in on the Trillium Line Phase 2 is on the Rideau River bridge south end of Carleton. It is in its most recent incarnation (we believe) a full study of making the bridge a full twin track AND pedestrian/MUP rebuild. The study delivery is (again, we believe) one of the main holdups on issuing the T-Line contract (aside from the Limebank extension). One holdup on the study delivery is an attempt (last time, we believe) to accumulate, consolidate, and agglomerate the funding for the full feature bridge.

IE: hope, hope, hope. (silly us, but nonetheless).

EnJoy!

Wait, that's actually being considered?

Good Day.

Considered - yes. Decided - we know not. We await the report.
Same as we awaited long for the T-Line Phase 2 extension report.....
- which finally came through with more track, slightly relocated.....
-- which then got extended even more, with alternative funding, to Limebank.
But we are still awaiting yet even longer for this report - which does not bode well, or does, but more complexidly yet.
( Sorry, I wax wierdly. Its what waiting so long is wont to do to one. )
Anyway, Jimmy has mentioned offhandedly on several occasions that it is being considered, but we know not for sure. We hope that this is the reason for the report delay.

EnJoy?

Separate from the Trillium Line phase 2 actually. The city got PTIF money to work on the EA, listed here:

https://pm.gc.ca/eng/news/2016/08/23/can...nt-public-transit-infrastructure-funding

(ctrl-F and search for "Carleton")

The project got put by the wayside it seems. I do not know if the PTIF funds were redirected to the Flora bridge, or the project just out on hold.

IMHO, the Carleton bridge upgrade should be one of the highest priorities of Stage2 South. It should certainly be higher than ANY of the southern extensions. It’s just extensions sound sexier than improvements that are actually helpful.
