More urgent bridge repairs in London's future.

https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/backlog-of-bridge-repairs-tops-55-million

Riverside Drive bridge over CN tracks is up for redesign.

Should it be rebuilt as 2 lane bridge or 4 lanes?

P.S. the new Gordie Howe bridge to USA in Windsor is being built to last 125 years.

The article is kind of vague on Riverside. They are talking about repairs, but what designs do they really need to do to repair? If it's being replaced, why is it in an article about bridges being repaired. I haven't heard anything about it needing replacement, so if it's being done next year, that seems kind of quick compared to other bridges, such as Ridout, which have already been talked about. I wonder how many people even realize they are on a bridge when they cross it lol. It does blend in pretty good

Progress at the Keg site on Wellington Rd across from White Oaks. At least I'm assuming this is the Keg, as I thought it was going towards the back of the lot. I posted a couple months ago where there was a small foundation with basement, which is the right part of the picture. They then built the larger foundation to the north of that and poured the floor last week.

Yes, this is the new Keg site. That is where the Keg north of Bradley Ave is moving to.

Another plaza by York Dev. This one at Adelaide St. and Sunningdale Rd. E
Lots of equipment out at this site in the last couple weeks. The site was already pretty flat so not sure if it's only grading work like their other similar site across from West 5. Was able to notice some survey stakes through the bushes along the road when I went by today.

The arched schemes were favourable by AECOM who did the Environmental Report on numerous criteria. It's a no-brainer when you are a councilor voting on what 5 options to go with after reading that report and what you currently notice about the current bridge. Not that they have voted on what option yet. Will the pick the 13.2 million Tied Arch or the 11.3 million Through Arch. The other three ranged from 9.6-10.6. The Through Arch is the most preferred. It is 0.7 to 1.7 million more than the other options.

This is the motion council voted on:
Quote:
That the Victoria Bridge Municipal Class Environmental Study Report BE REFERRED to the Managing Director, Environmental & Engineering Services to report back at a future meeting of the Civic Works Committee with more cost effective alternatives for addressing cultural heritage concerns that would include an enhanced design for a concrete girder bridge which incorporates special treatments, public art and/or portions of the existing bridge, with the goal of achieving an overall Project cost savings of $1 million dollars or greater.
This vote is also influenced by the public. If people want to complain but do nothing to contribute to government aside from vote every 4 years, you get what you get. A review of the Public Information Centre 2 - Comment Forms from 2017, the public did not want cheap "heritage" treatments. And that was not even the final input from the public. A standard 30 day public review period ended August 7th.

There are people who don't want to believe that change will happen. That everything will stay just like it is for the next 50+ years along Ridout St. That London will not change or progress or grow.

They are simply short sighted and have no vision.

Yeah maybe we will have personal teleportation devices and we won't need vehicles or roads anymore too.
Or in 50-100year when the traffic volumes get up to 20k, it will be time to replace the bridge. The current drawings have the bridge being wide enough for it to be retrofitted with 4 lanes. Yeah, it will lose bike lanes, and the sidewalks will be narrower. But currently, the lanes are 3.5 m wide. Lanes this wide with lower speeds is conducive to more accidents. 3.5 m is for speeds fro 80km/h or more.

This article is troubling - https://lfpress.com/business/local-business/apartment-developer-vexed-by-city-hall-hurdles

Bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy must be stopped. Whether it be administration or council we can't afford wasteful processes that add zero return on investment.

I took these a few days ago...tried to find the thread but gave up....this is on the North fringes of London, southwest corner of Adelaide and Sunningdale.:

These projects are just south, on the west side of Adelaide.

It might be just my imagination, but those 2 buildings backing onto Sunningdale seem to be taking forever.

841 Wellington road plaza is supposed to be getting a redeveopment. This article is from 2017 and the most recent I could find, but haven't heard anything on it since. I saw that Kelseys left the plaza, but I wonder when they're going to start knocking down the buildings.

We were at the breakfast restaurant a couple weeks ago and the lady there said she had no further idea than what was reported last year about the plaza being redeveloped. On a side note, the Kelsey's moved to the former Shoeless Joe's at Westmount, we had dinner there last night, and they did a really good on the place. Food was good too.

I like that redo of the plaza. Definitely more pedestrian friendly and a more attractive building.

Semi-autonomous automobiles are sharing our roads now and the tech and auto giants of this world have invested billions of dollars into R&D to make our vehicles completely autonomous.

Fully autonomous vehicles can safely travel closer together and faster than human driven vehicles. The penetration forecast is that sales of autonomous vehicles will overtake that of human operated vehicles in 22 years. This will have a major impact on how our traffic moves.

Do we need to invest billions to expand road capacity for 50 years from now when traffic flow could become exponentially more efficient in 30 years? Would our governments be willing to spend billions of public dollars to solve future congestion or embrace the private sector that is spending billions to solve it for us?
Honestly who wants to drive an autonomous vehicle? I know for a fact I'd rather drive a car myself then have some computer do it. I'm pretty sure more people would still drive a manually operated car than a autonomus one.

When autonomous vehicles are perfected, people may not have a choice over whether to drive a manually-operated car or use an autonomous one. Laws may well be changed to ban human-operated vehicles, based on the argument that autonomous vehicles are safer because they remove human error from the equation.

Bottom line is that someday there may be more drunks on the roads, but they won't be behind the wheel of any vehicles, as the vehicles will do the driving for them, LOL.

Far east end of the city, the steel is almost complete on the new Hyundai dealer at Dundas and Veterans, beside the Kia dealer. Down the block, a new plaza and gas bar is taking shape at the corner of Crumlin and Dundas.

Also, lots of grading and sewer work taking place in the field next to the Mazda dealer in the Automall. Not sure if it's another dealership getting ready to be built there, or if it's an expanded parking lot for Mazda. Wonder if Dale Downie Nissan is starting to feel lonely out on Oxford and wants to join the fun on Dundas?

Bridge closing for repairs - https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/tiny-bridge-closing-creates-major-london-traffic-headaches

Transportation network crippled by chokepoints and gaps in network. 2 lane roads where 4 lanes were needed years ago. Spending money rebuilding roads and not dealing with the widening at the same time. Sarnia Rd east of Hyde Park is case in point.

We need a rebuild of City Council and our traffic and engineering dept. People who have a vision and understanding of basic city planning.
