Sports arena, hotel planned for vacant north Phoenix parcel

By Corina Vanek – Reporter, Phoenix Business Journal

A 19.2-acre development in north Phoenix got the stamp of approval from the Phoenix City Council this week, which voted to rezone vacant land to open the areas up for development.

Plans submitted to the city by landowner Robert Eaton Jr. include a two-story sports arena and a four-story hotel.

The parcel, at 32000 N. 28th Ave., was previously zoned for a planned community district, but no master developer signed on to install infrastructure, which was the goal for the area when the city originally designated the zoning, according to city records.

As part of the development, Eaton and the development team will be required to maintain the pedestrian connection, known as the Paseo del Prado, and portions of the pedestrian walkway will be required to be shaded by either a structure or by landscaping, city documents show.

Eaton is the owner of Tuscani Pointe, LLC, which operates the nearby Tuscani Pointe commercial strip center at Carefree Highway and Seventh Street. The center contains a pharmacy, several restaurants, a dentist and a salon.

My first thought was the 'Yotes. But this location is way out by Loop 303. No way they would relocate out that far. Rising haven't won an MLS bid yet and already have their location set if the do get in the MLS. Diamondbacks, just no way. So you've got me. Maybe a small general purpose arena for concerts is all I can think of.

I read an article a while back that it was going to have two hockey rinks and some basketball courts. Not for a professional team.

Found it. http://nophonews.com/sports-arena-hockey-plans/

Minor Updates

New AZ Wilderness location broke ground yesterday and I noticed a new zoning hearing sign for the new apartment building on SWC of 3rd Ave/Roosevelt. This one should start moving pretty soon I hope..

On that note I stopped in AZ Wilderness in Gilbert over the weekend, blown away by the quality and complexity of their beers. We really enjoyed the experience and the food menu looked equally as interesting, will probably go there with some regularity when they open downtown.

Ever been Biggus?

A few years ago they swept several awards when they first came onto the scene , they are a good brewery but always a bit far east for folks downtown.

Worth going on your birthday too--32 oz. frosty mug for $3. Excited to have them downtown.

Did you just quote me saying I went there over the weekend and liked it and then ask if I've ever been?

Beat me to the punch. I meant to share this article yesterday...

https://azwildernessbrewing.blogspot.com/2017/12/new-ventures-new-worlds-same-vision.html?m=1

The article is a mission statement by the folks at Wilderness and a few reasons they’re wanting the downtown location followed by details on the project. It’s such a prime location and I wouldn’t have minded this building being demolished if it meant more housing, but the prospect of a well-regarded brewery is an also an excellent solution IML. Wil be tossing some back when this place makes its debut.

"have you not been to wilderness Before?"

Disappointing as I think this will be now the same height as the Optima development nearby...but I thought they developer had submitted two proposals one for a taller thinner building and I suppose this was the other shorter but wider block. Maybe Kierland will develop feeling very "DC" lol

Disappointing. I wonder if they caved due to the NiMBY fight that was brewing over the Kierland area? Can someone post the full article?

You can view the source to get the text. Dirty, but it works.

The guy who runs that Kierland NIMBY group is the world's biggest hypocrite. He hates the idea of towers there, but is moving in next door to the Optima development. I would have to detach my retinas to adequately roll my eyes at him.

I can view the cached article, but on my phone, it's more trouble than it's worth. I'll check it out when I get home. Yea, that guys has me all worked up from his opinion piece I posted the other day. Hypocrite indeed.

Superstition Meadery looking to come downtown:

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/restaurants/superstition-meadery-downtown-phoenix-expansion-10605775

Maybe they can take Pedal Haus' spot at the Churchill? I've been to their tasting room in Prescott and it's pretty great. Mead is not everyone's thing but it would add some nice variety.
