The international construction consortiums vying for more than $3 billion worth of light-rail contracts in Ottawa will have several more months to prepare their bids, the city said this week.

Separate contracts to extend the east-west Confederation Line as well as the north-south Trillium Line are now expected to be awarded by the end of this year. Last summer, city staff said they expected to announce the preferred proponents for the two projects by mid-2018.

In a memo this week, the city said the extenionsion was requested by the bidders in order to “take a more detailed look at some project elements to adequately design and price
their bid submissions.”

City staff added that they do not expect the delay to prevent construction from starting in early 2019 as scheduled.

I don't know when these were added (could have been at the same time as the one at Greenboro and I just didn't notice), but new platform displays have been added at Mooney's Bay and Carleton stations. This is in addition to the large displays located inside the entrances.

picture doesn't really show it, but the screens are actually angled downwards to make it a lot more readable.

Edit: Went looking on the forum since i thought i remembered seeing someone post a picture of the larger ones. And i found it: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=8235819&postcount=7419

It took a while to install all the screens across the system, but the Trillium line screens came relatively late.

What I found funny, was that in 2013 new light standards were installed at all the Trillium line stations, and the one with the screen was wired for what I assumed to be a future information system, including electrical and data wiring coiled up on the pole at screen height. When they installed these screens, they left that wire bundled up behind the screen, and pulled new wire to the sign.

There are three sizes of screens too, the big 70" one you link to, smaller 40" or so ones that are vertical or horizontal, and the very narrow ones at the Trillium line stations and some bus stops.

It would be nice if they took the Live Updates section (which is squished into the top right corner of that tiny display. impossible to read unless you're right in-front of the screen) and moved it below the arrival times area. It's not like those screens will ever display more than one route anyway..

I think they are still soliciting feedback on the screens. Might be worth it to throw that in.

I wish the transit information was better included in the data feeds. Go to a place like NYC and open transit app, and each line has additional notes about detours or issues. In Ottawa, there might be a message out out directing you to the website.

OC Transpo doesn't support Google's realtime GTFS format (only the static one). Instead they have their own set of APIs for realtime arrivals and detours, etc.

It's possible to string them together to make something that works kind of like the realtime GTFS format, but it's a lot of work. (It's something I'm working on right now for my app).

Hopefully some day they'll take that last step into the future and properly support the realtime GTFS spec. (as well as GPS updated times for the Trillium Line...)

I'm happy that we at least have an API - Places with one official app and no feed seem like the stone age now.

Trillium line is a long way off - the trains have GPS only to run the announcements, and that system is independent of the signalling system. There's also no cellular data connection like the buses have.

I asked OC Transpo on twitter a number of months ago and they said that it was something being considered for Stage 2. The Confederation Line will have live arrival times.

with the new government in place, is the trillium line still on track to terminate at Limebank Road?

Last I heard, Doug Ford said that all existing transit projects would continue as they were, but never gave a firm answer about the Limebank extension.

Quote:
Response from Doug Ford Leader, Ontario PC Party
Comments: Ontarians rely on public transit to get to work, see family and friends, and live their lives. Yet, after 15 years of broken Liberal promises, they are still waking up at the crack of dawn just to beat traffic. The PC Party has committed to province-wide funding for transit, which includes completing stage 2 of Ottawa’s Light Rapid Transit project. We will cut the red tape and end the delays to ensure that transit projects get completed on time and on budget and see this project through to completion.
Source, question 1b.

Good Day.

Of all the pieces, that particular last piece is particularly problematic.
He could easily pass it off as a pre-election Liberal boondoggle, but conversely,
given the Conservative MPPs in the area, he may well be talked into keeping it,
particularly as an offset 'commitment' to LRT alternatives everywhere and anywhere else but TO and subways-subways-subways.

We can but hope !

His statement on the matter literally included "15 years of broken Liberal promises", so it would be hilarious, but also very sad if he decided not to commit to it.

If he ditches the extension, I might just print that statement out and frame it as a memento of this goverment.

I feel like the Limebank extension stays. It's fairly cheap and private developers are footing part of the bill.

Good Day.

Cheap - yes. Good for PR as 'pro-LRT' choices (as opposed to sub-sub-sub) - yes.

As for the private sector involvement, I think that would only enter the fray if those developers get onto the local PC MPPs. Previous PC governments have had no problem at all in cancelling past projects in their entirety no matter the then-current state of progress in design or even construction. It's a cost-be-damned matter of perceived public perception and PR in the minds of the PC leadership, and who knows just how the #*^^ that works out in the end.

Fortunately, they have the already-extant example of mis-perception in the previous .to. current tenure of Jimmy as MPP/cabinet .to. mayor and the massive about-face involved.

We shall see when financial close on the contracts arrives aroundabout December.
