A couple of more pictures of the plaza in front of the events centre now that the trellises have been installed:

interesting article in the T&T.

apparently over 100 companies expressed interest in the 16 corporate boxes available at the events centre. They are going to do a lottery to see who the lucky winners will be.

There will be only 14 corporate boxes available in the lottery. One box is reserved for the Wildcats, while a second box is reserved for the stadiums "naming rights partner". This is a bit of a throwaway, but it implies that there in fact is a naming rights partner out there. I wonder who it is???

The annual cost of the boxes (depending on size) is $55,000 - $78,000 per year

100 companies interested at those pricepoints makes it seem to me that they left money on the table. I suspect that next time those boxes come up for renewal, there will be a significant price increase, just to trim the number of companies interested.

In retrospect, there probably should have been more boxes. They are only on one side of the arena. Even if they had only doubled the number of boxes available, there still would have been 3x the number of potential customers as there would have been boxes available. They badly underestimated the demand........

On the positive side they got $10000 in business from each one of these companies in order to participate in the lottery.

86 X $10000 = $860000

14 X $65000 (varied pricing) = $910000

Roughly $1.8 generated from this venture. Obviously in some cases these businesses were purchasing advertising at the old coliseum, but nothing close to this dollar value. This is where the events centre shines in comparison to the old barn in terms of generating new revenue.

They could also have dropped the "naming partner" bit as an incentive strategy. Or else, they would have maybe add "to be announced soon".

We're less than 2 months away from the City getting a hold of the Centre, and still no news in the Naming Right department.

Maybe by pointing that out, Murphy's Law will manifest and it will be announced today

And yes, they should have definitely build more boxes. While good for the eyes, those windows in the corner have wasted a lot of potentials revenues. And the cost of those boxes are not only depending of the size, but also the locations. Im sure some corporations will drop from the draw if they see they can't get one that give access to all events (i know if i was in the mix, I wouldnt pay 60k just to see Wildcats games). At the moment, out of 8 events announced, around half of it will be useless for half of the events. And judging by how the Seinfeld show is selling, wouldn't be surprised if they decide to go with a smaller setup as well.

Quick question. How are those trellises to be completed? I have seen greenery in some of the mock up pictures of the plaza. Would this greenery (if that is the case) be "live" growing plants, etc.... artificial? Any lighting on these trellises? Just curious if anyone knows how they are going to finish these. Thanks.

I hope that the structures themselves won't stay naked like that - they're pretty ugly. Live greenery and lighting would give us own mini version of the Singapore supertrees.

Foliage - absolutely! It will be live foliage too, no plastic leaves here!

Lights - sounds like a good idea. I don’t know however if lights are planned or not, but they would be good for nighttime ambience to be sure.

I know people can be very critical of spending money on fountains but seeing this plaza come together I cant help but think a water feature will really make this area feel complete as a public gathering space. There's some about running fountains that make a space seem relaxing and welcoming. You can also do some fun things with lighting, syncing it with the events centre lighting.

I could see that a few years down the road when other monies become available.

Excellent idea. They could have added a fountain like the new one in Victoria Park for the price of the sculpture that is going out front. The fountain would have been much nicer indeed.

I was talking about the trellis with a few others that work nearby and the first question is always 'how long until some kid climbs that and falls on their head?'. I can already see the fix to this by putting a fence around every single piece for our protection

If the City/Centre want to make a BANG for Opening Day, it wouldn't get bigger than this.

Paul Mccartney announced the first dates of his "Freshen Up" tour with four Canadian dates (he probably have an exclusive clause with the Austin City Limits Music Festival to not have any US dates before October), and the dates fit right in.

September
17 – Quebec City, QC – Videotron Centre
20 – Montreal, QC – Bell Centre
28 – Winnipeg, MB – Bell MTS Place
30 – Edmonton, AB – Rogers Place

The spacing between the dates is usually to be able to add a 2nd date if needed, but im sure they could fit a date a week before to open the Centre.

And if SMG cant foot the entire bill, im sure the City would gladly help.

Now, THIS, I would definitely go see. The rest of the lineup announced already.... ehhhhhh.... I don't know though if the city would help in any way as they pretty much gave up all the concert business to SMG.

I had the opportunity to tour the event center today at work. From the lower bowels of the place, to the VIP rooms and the catwalk... WOW is the only word required!

I have been excited about this project when it became an idea well before the approval stage sooooo many years a go and was super pumped to see it go ahead but actually seing the final product is just amazing! I'm still blown away!

Unfortunately with all the excitement, I did not take any pictures. Trust me, "WOW".

I tried some poking and prodding on info such as naming announcement and other acts coming but was not successful however they are anticipating great shows over time with the network that SMG has.

I can't wait to see Jerry Seinfeld. That will be my first show there (I got tickets for my birthday)

Article in the T&T today about naming rights.

They hope to have a naming rights partner announced by opening night.

They are in discussions with both local and national companies.

They are looking for a multi year, multi million dollar agreement.

Given recent events in the metro area, my odds on favourite is TD Bank Centre

Looks like someone is maybe aiming a little too high to not already have a name and "hoping" to have one by opening day (in less than 2 months).

They could have announce it as a separate event before opening day, so that people can gather up and witness the announcement. If they do it by opening night, you'll just get MORE car traffic downtown from people wanting to see the unveiling plus those going to the opening day event.

Dont know what they are expecting money wise, but giving recent numbers from similar size arenas, it should be around 5-600k/year max (and a 10 years deal):

Scotiabank Centre (Halifax): 650k/year (but was also covering upgrade cost)
Budweiser Gardens (London): 640k/year
FirstOntario Centre (Hamilton): 350k/year
K-Rock Centre (Kingston): 330k/year
Sleeman Centre (Guelph): 120k/year
Tribute Communities Centre (Oshawa): 250k/Year
