no reason why upgraded digital signage shouldn't have been installed. they could sell ads on that space and bring in revenue.

To be honest, I am not sure where the operations centre will be. It need not be at the same location as one of the MSFs and I am not sure why you think we would need a second operation centre (except maybe one for the Trillium line and one for the Confederation line).

The second MSF is planned to be just west of Moodie Drive on the north side of the Queensway (Corkstown Rd. will be shifted north to make room for it). It hasn't been decided yet if it will be built in Stage 2 or if they will wait for Stage 3. The Belfast MSF is being expanded to be large enough to handle all of the Stage 2 trains for the Confederation Line, but it will be tight and there will be little to no room for expansion, so the preference is to build the second MSF sooner rather than later. It would also give more operational flexibility having MSFs near opposite ends of the line, allowing them to ramp up service faster and get trains (and their drivers) out of service sooner (it will probably take over 30 minutes to get a trains from Belfast to Moodie Station, or back).

The second MSF will only do minor, regular maintenance. Repairs and major servicing will be done at Belfast.

I'm actually not a huge fan of screens like these. I like the LCD obviously, but I find it becomes a little cluttered in most applications. All I want to see is when my next train comes.

Those Trillium Line signs are nice, but they are next to useless since they are not real-time and the Trillium Line rarely follows the "schedule" exactly.

That's a good point. With a high resolution screen, the temptation is to fill it with OUI (Other Useless Information) when all you really want is when the next train is and where it is going (significant after stage 2). For everything else, there is an app for that.

But is 3/4 of your in dash display covered with ads and other useless information? Put a display like that in a public venue and the temptation to fill up screen real-estate with junk becomes irresistible, and you end up with the next train information in a tiny tiny font in a small corner of the display. Then they clear the display to show a 30 second ad, with no useful information displayed. As low tech as it looks, LED displays provides the information you need in a clear and easy to read format whenever you want it.

Like @corynv mentioned, there are number of those signs (of various sizes) at Transitway and Trillium Line stations.

I'm guessing that since they're a recent addition (only added less than a year ago) they weren't included in the Confederation Line station plans.

I'm a fan of the simplicity. Just tell me what time it currently is and when my next train(s) are coming and where they're going if not obvious. Everything else can be obtained via alternate (and more accurate, detailed) means.

Athens metro has a similar even simpler design:

Hopefully the change fonts or layout though. Right now on the photo above it looks ugly and is not very readable.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are Montreal's displays in their metro stations.

I love high tech things as much as the next guy (probably a lot more than the next guy actually) but on this I agree with you. The simple LED sign is most effective for this application.

I think the LCD screens would work really well in entrance and concourse areas. They'd also be capable of displaying bus arrivals and other news, etc. On platform, the LED signs keep things simple yet effective.

They actually will have both. At Hurdman you can see the installations for the large upright lcd screens like at the entrance at greenboro and inside Billings (e.g. this bus at this stop), plus the led signs on the platform.

That's the ones I meant, passing by Hurdman today it seems they have one of these screens on the lower concourse and one on each platform in addition to the orange led signs which are installed and already turned on
