The greater L.A. "megalopolis" stretches from Ventura/Oxnard to Redlands/Riverside/Morongo Valley along the west-east axis, and from Santa Clarita (or even Lancaster) down to Long Beach and ultimately San Clemente on the north-south axis. It is YUGE, in size and population. The center is DTLA. San Diego retains a separation from the megalopolis because of the open lands of Camp Pendleton. Santa Barbara is separate because of a stretch of open coast west of Ventura. Only the greater New York City megalopolis exceeds the L.A. megalopolis in population and almost matches it in size in the U.S.

Long Beach is a stretch because of how far it is, its been able to get its own identity separately from the rest, but even now, when you travel around the country and abroad, people still associate Disneyland with LA even though its 30 miles away and in a totally different city and county. Even I sometimes, driving around LA, rarely differentiate the city borders and just clump them together as "I'm in LA" especially when most of those cities are completely surrounded on all sides by LA city limits.
One of my biggest pet peeves! I really don't like how people say they live in LA when they actually live in the city of Downey or Huntington Park etc. Also, when people say they don't live in the city of LA when they actually live in North Hollywood, Van Nuys, Pacoima, Wilmington, San Pedro, etc.

The part in bold is way worse. I can understand saying you're from LA when you're from one of the smaller cities in the region while outside California. If you meet someone from the area, then you can dive deeper. On the other hand, I've had people tell me "no I live in Woodland Hills, not LA" and I'm just like "don't you know you pay LA city taxes, etc.?" It baffles me.

That's like people from NYC saying they are from Dumbo, Jamaica, or Upper Eastside. I don't think it is that big of a deal.

When the city is big like LA (or NYC) it is natural for people want to identify with their specific neighborhood.

Yeah of course but I'm talking about the people who are seemingly not even aware that Woodland Hills, etc. is not it's own separate city. The "no I live in Woodland Hills, not LA" part of my post. I was speaking with a friend once and she was saying "yeah I was in Northridge and it was hot but coming back down into LA...". In my head I'm thinking "you've actually been in LA all day" but I understand why she said that. It's funny to me. Maybe cause we're all mostly geography nerds here so we're more keen on city boundaries and neighborhoods.

I would say people are simply being more specific to give an idea of an exact location. I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I agree and never thought it was a big deal either. Though I've been corrected by someone living in Woodland Hills before lol.

The Rams play in Inglewood, The LA Times is now headquartered in El Segundo, the Galaxy plays in Carson, Disney is headquartered in Burbank. If LA can claim them as their own (which it will and does and often in the city discussions forum), especially when it wants to boost it’s image or metrics by including them, certainly it goes the other way around too.

LA is more of a county, than a city. If you’re from LA county, you’re from LA in regards to the rest of the country or state. When the conversation takes place in LA among southern Californians, then it makes sense to be more specific with the actual city and neighborhood.

Do people actually do this? I rarely hear someone misspeak where they live. It’s pretty typical for someone to simply say they live in the Valley as a catch all.

I think that the SoCal MegaRegion, which does include San Diego, Las Vegas and even Tijuana I believe are one of the largest in the country.. the biggest one being the Great Lakes megaregion

I used to get confused growing up when I visited my mom in West Covina. She always tells people she lives in LA (county), but when I visit her in West covina and I’m gonna see a concert at the staples center she would always say “you’re leaving to LA now?” And it took me a few years that whenever she talked about LA while in West Covina, she meant the City of LA. I think ppl in LA county should just start saying “the city” when referring to the city of LA, because it can get confusing

Kind of like the Bay Area, San Francisco being the City as they call it up there.

True, I think they call it the city for a different reason though. Literally the entire city of San Francisco makes up the county of San Francisco. The county and city are the exact same thing, so they just call it the city. At least that’s what I think lol

I think its actually the other way around. LA doesn't have to claim anything since its already a globally recognizable powerhouse. What we have is corporations attaching their name to the city. The most ridiculous one I can think of ?

"The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"
Literally the most ridiculous name in the history of the sports world but since LA is more recognizable than Anaheim, they changed the name, with most of the residents in the OC furious with the change, already being in an everlasting shadow of LA.

Disney is different. What came first? Disney Studios/corporate office or Disneyland ? Disney studios/Corporate office opened decades before Disneyland did. So LA can claim the studios rightfully so but cant claim Disneyland and actually never does and neither does Disneyland vice versa.

Everything else. as said before. Its just easier to attach yourself to LA than the city you're in because its more recognizable. LA isn't doing it or asking for it, corporations are doing it for the exposure and value.

Imagine having the Carson Chargers or Lakewood Rams or the Pico Rivera Clippers. Hell how about the Norwalk Lakers ? HAHA everybody would be sooooo confused.

https://urbanize.la/post/look-inside-500-million-circa-towers

Anybody else underwhelmed with the interiors of Circa? the units look like they are straight off an Ikea display room. I could understand if it were some 7 story monoloith or nondistinct random apartment building somewhere else in the city but when you start charging 3k plus for rent, i would expect a little more.

Agreed, however they are rentals (originally envisioned as condo's I believe), i think the tiny W&D in the closet looks so Funny, a bit undersized.
BTW, i can see from my window what looks like a temporary crane next door to Circa, i suspect they are demolishing the El Compadre & Hooters, can anyone down that way confirm?

As someone who grew up in Irvine this one cuts deep . But after the 8th or 9th time trying to explain where "Orange County" is to some midwesterner you swallow that inner feeling of Angelino disapproval and start saying you're from LA. At the very least I spent some years living in the city proper so I know it as more than just a commuter.

^^^ Its hard. I recently moved to Los Alamitos. Literally plopped right on top of the county borders between LA and OC. When I travel and people ask "Where are you from ???"
I say "Oh I'm from Los Alamitos, western border of orange county, but about 15 minutes away from Disneyland" Never fails. I get a dear in headlights look. I sigh and say "I'm from LA" and they're like "OOOHHHHH ! do you go to the beach often ????" cant tell you how many times I've been tempted to pull up google maps on my phone.

That's true. Rentals always cheapen out with the interior materials but they could have tried a little better. With the highest asking price at 24k a month. I would assume the higher the price, they better the materials. I hope.

And God I hope so. That would be great. Circas semi twin neighbors rising. I'm probably the only one these days on here that get excited with almost every single little project that goes up still. I still have the 20 year jitters of literally NOTHING happening downtown.

Onni Twins

Mack Urban/AECOM

Onni 50 (Leveltier)

I love The Frankentowers, they are the most urban pedestrian beautiful new buildings going up, especially the first one. Also Onni’s 50 story hat is revealed. I’m calling this two faced project Leveltier (level and atelier put together). The base of this building is going for the dark atelier theme and the rest of the podium is the lighter level look
