You're definitely right, a lot of them look physically different from each other but I feel like they're all going to use similar clear or gray glass (save for maybe 753 Seymour which looks like it'll use blue glass). It's always nice to have modern towers but I always hope to see more variety in colour (despite clear/gray glass being a staple of modern offices). Regardless, all of the office towers currently proposed or U/C in Vancouver will look fantastic.

Horizontal Skyscrapers

Interesting article on "horizontal skyscrapers" in China. Wonder if the trend to bridges between towers like the Arc will continue here.

Well... the Arc is just a superficial architectural choice (honestly speaking).

I think that this article is the beginning of the next generation's city planning - being multi-levelled cities. The only way for Vancouver to achieve this is to get off its "small-town" mindset and to start building taller: way taller.

This is so shockingly dystopian, that I prefer to not even imagine the scenario.

The idea of ground dwellers and people who never need to touch the ground gives me shivers.

People still need to come down to go about their daily routine, really, unless you are referring to computer game nerds who never leave their rooms, but then again I see no difference between one living in a high-rise versus those basement suite ground hogs.

You should check out the Marina Sands in Singapore, where the top "platter" deck commands an awesome view of Singapore's CBD, and even the hermit Kingdom dictator Kim Jong-Un couldn't resist a tour of that.

Aware of Marina Sands.

But this development in China is something different all together.

It encourages not needing to go down to the ground. In theory if you live and work in the complex, you may not need to go down to ground level very often.

This is just cause for concern in an already, and increasingly stratified society.

Give me a break it's a stupid sky park and it's just as dystopian as any skybridge or basement concourse connecting buildings. Dream on about your hoard of ground dwellers...

Actually, it has a lot to do with population, land scarcity / land use and traffic flows. Chongqing municipality has 27 million people; the city itself has 9 million.

You already see this in places like Hong Kong. Anyone who has not walked around Mongkok on a Saturday afternoon cannot understand how crowded it can get on the street. Think of the crowds leaving BC Place after a Lions or Whitecaps game. Now imagine this happening throughout the day.

So planners do everything they can to get people off the street, whether through elevated walkways, underground malls / passages and all-in-one complexes.

There would be some efficiencies, reducing the load on elevators below the bridges, if there is a need to transfer between towers.
That makes sense for office buildings occupied by the departments of the same company or to shop at retail stores.

In essence it's like Calgary's Plus-15 but higher up.
Some condo towers already have skylobbies to reduce the need for additional elevator cores. This could help with that, I assume.

This development is; its about setting a broader trend.

As for ground dwellers - look at NYC, Mumbai, other mega centres.

The rich live in multi-story penthouses, or entire skyscrapers and commute to work via private helicopter. This isn't the future, this is now.

No large leap of faith required to see how the ultra wealthy continue to separate themselves from the rest and this type of design promotes precisely that type of social stratification.

The article mentions that most of the skybridge is publicly accessible.

You've been watching 'Altered Carbon' on Netflix, haven't you?

If you haven't, you ought to check it out if for no other reason than that dystopian future where the mega-rich live in not just sky-high skyscrapers ( as in, above the clouds, sky-high), but literal Cloud cities (yeah....just like in Star Wars) and cloud mansions high up in the stratosphere almost, and they never have to go down to the surface to bother with the "grounders" who are both literally and figuratively beneath them.

I doubt that that will ever be a thing any time in our future - near or far - but the notion of a city planning and living scenario (especially in super-densely populated regions) where the wealthy live in high-end, high-rise condo buildings that are super self-contained and enable them to never have to interact with people living in less desirable accommodations below them is not just beyond the realm of possibility but actually our reality now in parts of the world like Hong Kong.

Canada is not nearly densely populated (or scarce in buildable land) for such a situation to ever be a practical reality any time soon.
