So technically you are crazy, and the old expression is crazy people are crazy, they just don't realize they're crazy.

What's mental is the confidence that 99% of people would want to live in a 4500 square foot house. I won't bother with calling 800 square feet a chicken coop. I wouldn't want to live in a 4500 square foot house and I'm one generation removed from boomers. I'm not alone with my generation. The generations younger than me have even less desire for sprawling mansions. That's one of the main driving forces for the urban renaissance in North America.

The driving force behind that, is because They can’t afford a house or even a townhome. It’s true that there are people who choose to live the lifestyle Have a smaller condo apartment, but those people usually are single or young couple, and definitely no kids.
You are bearing on about suburban sprawl, no young people anywhere of any kind of economic income want to live in the suburbs, and for good reason suburbs are devoid of any kind of life for soul. The only young people who want to live in the suburbs are those douche bags with the big trucks and the chrome balls hanging off the back.

There are still many young people that desire to live in the suburbs and will be quite happy living there. Of that subset, there will also be those that find 4500 square feet too much house regardless if they can afford it or not. You need a lot of stuff to fill it and most people desire to interact with family as much as possible. That will happen less in a sprawling 4500 square feet.

Young professionals ARE raising families in as small as one bedroom apartments because they have been priced out of the market and the surrounding urban markets they are residing in. They can afford a house on the outskirts of the city. They just don't choose it. Eventually, their babies and toddlers will become kids and a tough decision will have to be made.

Why are we even talking about 4500 sqft houses? That must account for about 0.1% of the housing stock in Calgary, if that. Just because you might not want to live in a 500-800sqft condo and would like your own door and a little outdoor space doesn't mean the only thing you could possibly want is a McMansion.

I think the house is too much for the lot it was put on, one of the many reasons they can't sell it.

Is it 9,000 sq. ft. or 6,000 sq. ft. The description off to the right says 9K but the dashboard above the pics says 6,006 sq. ft. The place looks great but who needs 8 bathrooms and 8 garages (can that be right?)?!

I read the full description and it says "dream 5 car garage." Whoever filled in the form didn't seem to care too much about accuracy. Probably why it hasn't sold yet!

What exactly is better about the quality of life in the suburbs? The only thing i can think of is having a larger house, and it's becoming apparent that larger isn't better, quality always beats out quantity.

As I mentioned the trend nowadays is quality over quantity, people with money are preferring location and coolness over a massive pile of drywall and stucco. Young people don't want big houses, it not cool, there's a reason large houses have earned the nickname McMansion

I see someone building a house like this in the inner city and I can't help but think they must be an asshole.
