Lots of construction on the Trans-Canada has started up with the weather finally cooperating. Sadly not much of it will be twinning related. I had a long delay at Three Valley Gap for what I would assume is the netting work being done that was mentioned recently in this thread. Seems like that's just throwing more money at a bad situation rather than trying to bypass it altogether.

If they try to twin the existing route then you still have the same issues you have today, and it's probably an expensive bridge solution because of the road being right next to the lake. They can try tunneling next to the current highway but I'm sure that mountain wouldn't be fun to work with. What does that leave? Significant bypasses like Highway 97 along Wood Lake. Also pretty expensive and probably tougher to do here than in Lake Country.

That's the NDP way. The last time they were in government in the 1990s they stalled all kinds of infrastructure projects because they wanted to fund social programs instead. Plus, their higher taxes meant because had the lowest growth of any province in Canada during the decade of disaster.

The NDP is NFG.

CHETWYND, B.C. — The provincial government has announced that work has started at five locations west of Chetwynd to build new bridges along Highway 97 that will reduce the risk of washouts during times of heavy rain and flooding.

The ministry says it is is investing $26.8 million on this flood mitigation strategy for the area. These projects are in addition to recovery work that has been ongoing since June 2016, when severe flooding caused extensive damage throughout the Peace District.

“The 2016 floods caused a lot of hardship for people in the Peace District, and we want to make sure our infrastructure can withstand future flooding events,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena. “These are significant infrastructure projects which will boost safety and reliability for people travelling on Highway 97, particularly during heavy rain.”

Existing culverts at the five locations below are being replaced with modern two-lane bridges capable of withstanding a 200-year flood level. New highway approaches are being built on both sides of each bridge, and works will be done to stabilize the creek banks.

The province has been steadily replacing all those two lane arch bridges that were ubiquitous on BC highways for the last 40 years. I wonder if this is not an extension of that program.

Beautiful country up there around Chetwynd. Moberly Lake is really nice.

They're replacing culverts with bridges to help prevent road washouts.

Interesting read on the variable speed limits: http://www.tac-atc.ca/sites/default/files/conf_papers/variable_speed_final.pdf

They can change the speed limit signs every 15 minutes depending on conditions. Run by a computer algorithm to determine the recommended speed limit and then OK'd by humans. I bet we'll see these expanded to more of the mountain passes. They don't need as many of the flashing overhead light gantries, etc. as they did on the first ones though. Just use rectangular rapid flash beacons on the speed signs. It'd be much cheaper to install.

I wish they'd put a few in Jasper so that you could make it through the park in a decent amount of time without having to drop down to 70 in places
